Highpoint has always been a pleasure to do business with for me.

I've ordered a few small items from TelescopesPlus and they've done well. Fast shipping.

Whenever I've dealt with High Point Scientific, they have been terrific. Great support, free shipping, and an excellent source of information. Amazon is also an excellent seller. I just prefer someone who knows about what they're selling.

I have dealt with HPS and Hayneedle (the predecessor to Telescopesplus). I had no issues with either. But for the sake of dealing with folks that have a better understanding of the product, I would work with HPS as a first option. They have always been responsive and gone the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction in my experience.

As to the two scopes, the AD12 and Z12 - they are indeed the same beast from the same factory (GSO in Taiwan). Apertura and Zhumell are simply different labels slapped onto the same package to be sold by different vendors. I have a Z10 and an AD12, same quality and build. I've also had good luck with B&H Photo - bought a Twilight II mount from them and it arrived quickly by Fed Ex and in good order. I've purchased binoculars from Amazon. I also dealt with Hayneedle, which some folks knock but I had a good experience there as well.

Thanks everyone for the awesome info!

I am leaning toward HPS to buy the AD12. But I just can't get over that worry of the (slim?) chance something is wrong with the order (damage on shipping, or manufacturer's defect) and I need to initiate a return. This thing weighs close to 100lbs, I don't even wanna think what the shipping costs would be to send back. (not that this is a likely scenario, to be fair... just a worry I can't shake)

That being said, has anyone had any experience returning items to HPS? If there is something wrong with the item, will they help pay for shipping back as well?

I've never used Telescopes Plus. They may be excellent but I don't know it.

There are several multi-brand vendors I tend to check. High Point is one but I'll also check OPT Corp, Adorama, Agena Astro, and often Orion. But if I'm getting a Sky-Watcher, Meade, Explore Scientific (or similar) product I'll look to see if I can buy direct. The last few times I checked it didn't look like Celestron would sell direct.

Years ago I wanted a RigelSys product. I purchased direct and as a result I was able to get exactly what I wanted rather than almost what I wanted. A lot of the small shops don't really expect to make much money but sell as much as a service to the community as a profit center - they have to keep their day job in order to pay their bills. Buying direct can make a huge difference to them and they tend to actually enjoy working with you on customization of the product for what is often a surprisingly small fee and occasionally for free. So I buy direct from them when I can and thus their profit is a tiny bit bigger and when I need to I'll work with them on improvements.

One other thing? If the shop is somewhat near you might be able to get a discount for going there and paying cash. The amounts they have to pay the credit card companies can hurt them considerably. If they are paying fees to both Amazon (or eBay) and to credit card companies - it can be tough to stay in business.
Totally agree, I would LOVE to see this telescope in person if I could! And I always like to support my local businesses when I can. You're right, often times you get that "extra mile" of service when you get to talk to people in person. Or even if there are no local shops, I agree, if I can buy direct that is always a nice option.

Unfortunately, when it comes to Telescopes... rural New Brunswick, Canada is pretty slim pickins! Haha. I think the closest shop is a 6Hr drive away in Halifax, NS... but they don't even appear to carry anything other than Celestron and SkyWatcher (good brands, for sure, just not what I am in the market for).
I think it'll have to be online ordering for me!

It's more direct to simply ask them. They are friendly courteous folks.

Oh Yes, absolutely. I was planning to touch base with them regardless to inquire. But I find sometimes what the sales folks tell you over the phone, and what the company actually follows-through with in a real-life situation... can be different (unlikely, judging from the generally positive feedback here re: HPS, just my general rule of thumb coming from experience with other vendors).

So I just thought I'd ask, in case anyone has had first hand experience.

I bought my TW 1 mount from Amazon. No problem. My first pair of Skymaster 15x70 binos from Amazon arrived with an internal baffle broken off and rattling around. Easy exchange. But was it bad QC or damaged in shipping or tossed on my front step on delivery?

I'm told that Amazon is now hiring third party contractors for delivery - basically anybody with a van can deliver and they get paid by the piece, so they have an incentive to rush deliveries. I don't know the details or if that's true, but I've seen some 3rd party delivery folks around here and they are not people I'd trust an OTA to. (But then there is that easy AMZ exchange and who knows how bad other shipping methods are.)

I ordered a used GT mount from High Point, but after confirming the order, they told me it was sold. Just bad timing - it was sold while my order was being processed. Disappointing but that wouldn't stop me from doing business with them. And they kinda of did me a favor - I decided to rethink the whole GT thing after that.

Never had that experience. I have had the experience with them that if the person I was dealing with was uncertain about something they'd check to make certain.
