The red dot finder is more than adequate for its task which is to help you get alignment stars visible in your telescope's eyepiece (20 to 35 mm). Once you can see an alignment star in your telescope's eyepiece, center it.

Accurately centering the alignment star is critical for accurate gotos. A 12.5 mm reticle eye makes this task very easy. If you don't have a reticle eyepiece then defocus the star until it makes a big white dot. This will help you judge when you have the star centered. After you complete aligning your mount you will not need to use the star finder as your gotos should be visible in a 20 to 35 mm eyepiece.

    Dear Stephen

Thanks so much. That is helpful. So, I gather one should use a lower power eye piece (you mentioned 24 or 32). I have a 25 and a 20. Which do you suggest I use for this iterative process.

    Thanks again for any advice.

    Dear All

I wondered if there was any general advice when there is an "alignment" failure. I was using the alignment procedure with 3 objects and 4 times it failed. I varied one of the stars also, without success. I have been able to successfully align in the past, so I don't think it is my Nexstar 8 SE. Also, it was about 29 degrees and I had trouble with the hand controller moving the scope -- is that to be expected?

    Thanks for any advice,

    Sandy

Biggest problem I had when using Sky Align was the alignment wasn't that good, 2- Star alignment works a bit better but requires you to be familiar with what stars you want to use for the alignment.
One thing I found out recently and I don't know how much of a difference it makes I have yet to be able to go out yet since I found out about it to try it out is...
The hand controller clearly says, "center the object in the finder scope then press enter" Center the star then press align.

What I have been doing for over a year now is; Locating the star in the eye piece "first" then pressing enter and then centering the star in the eye piece again even though the star is still kinda in the center.
So not sure if that really is a big deal or not but looking forward to trying out the centering the star first in the finder scope and then pressing enter followed by centering the star in the eye piece and then pressing align.

I'm gonna assume depending on what alignment you're using if it's the Sky Align still might be due to the calculation that hand controller is trying to figure out what star you're using.
My advice would be to use only the brightest stars you can see not dim stars.

Another thing could be that maybe your location is wrong for where you're viewing from, you'd need to check in the hand controller for Time/loc and make sure that your latitude and longitude are correct if you recently factory reset the controller and never re-entered your latitude and longitude this can be a problem as well.

It really makes little difference if you go through the routine of finder first and then eyepiece second.
The alignment only cares about and accepts the eyepiece centering.
For me it's a good prompt to ensure the finder/main scope alignment is good.

    Dear SXINIAS

Could you explain what you mean by a "gotos?" I'll look into a reticle eyepiece.

That sounds like useful advice. I have trouble reading the display on the hand controller as it writes over itself. I will try your advice next to center the star in the finder scope, press enter, then center the star in the eye piece, and press align. I was using some dim stars so that could have been the problem also. I didn't have the moon that night.

    Thank you!

The NexStar hand controller is difficult to view in cold temperatures which I presume you are experiencing now in PA.
The LCD display becomes sluggish and it does indeed look like an overwrite.
Very annoying. Some users make some sort of warming arrangement- wrap hand warmers around it etc.- or put the HC in a pocket.
You just have to remember not to walk away from the scope with it still in the pocket.
    Yep, it's a PITA.....

I agree with the above cold temperatures make the HC almost impossible to read the second line. It did help to go into utilities and slow the scrolling down to the lowest setting. I have been viewing at between o degrees and minus 15 centigrade and this makes things vey difficult. I also have a hard time getting alignment at times. I don't think I am getting the star right in the centre of the eyepiece.
