Question 3D interactive sky software with rt ascension and declination?

    Hi,

I'm looking for software or an app (preferably Mac OS or iOS, but Windows alright too) which
allows the user to stand on a point on earth, look out at the sky, and see stars, constellations,
etc within a grid of lines of right ascension and declination. I can find really good apps which
show the stars etc (Night Sky, for eg) but without the grid.

Any references? Free would be preferred.

    Thanks so much!

    Welcome to the forum!

Stellarium is free. Not sure you can get a mobile version which will do that but I think you can.

I think you can also do that with SkySafari. I'm not sure about a free version being available.

Stellarium is the best bet for your PC. There is a version for your phone but I have never used it.

For android or IOS Skysafari gets my vote for a paid for app, they do have a basic version that is free.

I think there are no grid lines in the free version of SkySafari - one of the downsides for not going with the paid app.

I use SkEye for android and I like it. I believe they have an iphone version.
Since I believe they all provide the RA and Dec info, can I ask why the grid lines themselves are so important?

Sure. I'm trying to get my head around how the earth is oriented within the celestial sphere.
Given my location on earth, the earth's rotation, and the earth's rotation around the sun,
what swath of the sky am I seeing as the days weeks and months go by. Reading one or two
stars' RAs and Dec numbers is not the same for me as seeing the grids as I look...

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful replies!!!

Through the year, you will see all of the sky from the north celestial pole down to a southern declination that is <your latitude> - 90 degrees. So, here at +45 degrees, I can see everything down to 45 - 90 = -45 degrees declination.
