Default New to Meade - power supply

    Hi Everyone,

I am brand new to Meade and just getting back into astronomy. I am anxiously awaiting delivery on my new Meade lx90 8 inch. I have a rechargeable power supply from Talentcell and I am wondering if anyone has ever used this with a Meade lx90?

Thanks for the help and I plan to ask a lot of questions for the next few weeks so please be patient.

    So exciting...

    Corey

    Welcome to the forum!!

I always power with an automotive jump starter box. A small 7A/h battery will run the mount all night. A slightly heavier 17A/h will run it for multiple nights. Do you know the output of your battery?

I have LX90ACF and I only use a 4.5 Ah 12V rechargeable battery which I secure to the tripod eyepiece platform with Velcro. At my last star party it lasted the whole two days and was still above 12 volt.

I am not sure. It is a 12v/6000mah Lithium/Ion battery. It states the max output @ 12v/3A. Does that make sense?

That battery will be fine for at least a night or 2, its a 12v which will last around 1 hour when it draws 6 amps , the ETX will draw around 1 amp max so good for at least 6 hours , thats when the battery is fully charged and in 100% condition , that never happens so probably only 5 hrs , but remember that once its tracking an object the mount power usage drops , its only around 5hrs when you continually slew from one object to another.
One needs to test a battery under load in other words say a car battery, it should read around 13.5 v and when you start the car drop to 12.5 , but a bad battery will read 12v and when you start will drop to almost 0v

It means its a 6Ah 12 Volt battery that is fused at 3A for protection. The 8" LX90 with AudioStar controller does not need a big battery as I mentioned mine with a 12V 4.5 Ah battery did two nights of heavy goto work and still had power left. My backup battery was a 7Ah but I did not need it.

I forgot that I also have a Celestron 17 Powerbank from my previous Astronomy life. Again, newbie question, should I remove the c batteries when using the Powerbank?

I do.. simply because its easy to forget to switch the power off when you remove the aux 12V plug and then you find your expensive C cells is flat because the switch in the plug changes to internal batteries when the lead is removed.

    You'll be fine.

First... the term "12v" is a bit of misnomer. Nearly everything that runs on "12v" really means "12v system". Voltages are often closer to 13v (because if a lead-acid battery is only able to provide 12v then that's a "low" battery.)

The scope will have no problem with the voltage and the 3 amps is more than enough.

My 14" LX-200 is drawing about .5 to .6 watts while tracking (that works out to 0.05 amps). The only time the scope will use more is when you slew at high speed.

Thanks for all of the help. I just got my Meade power adapter and I am almost a set. I bought a dew shield, but I am unsure if I am going to need a heater. I am going up a little further north next weekend. I have my old Orion bag for my tripod
I could not see spending $300 for a case for the optical tube, so I went online and bought a large padded case for photo equipment for $100. I am getting it today and I hope it fits. Looking forward to some great planetary viewing.
