Default Set up Nextstar to track before its dark?

    I have a 4SE which Im loving.

A question which Ive wondered (this maybe a dumb question) can you align the scope when its light?

Im really thinking late afternoon and looking at the moon. Id like to track it but to track I have to use skyalign dont I?

Obviously I cant see the stars so am I missing something?

    Thanks buddsy

You can do a alignment on the Moon though it will not be really accurate and then add alignment stars as it gets darker to improve the goto.

From the alignment options, choose Solar System instead of SkyAlign, then select Moon. Also be sure to set the Tracking Rate to Lunar.

If you have entered the correct date, time, and location and your scope is level, it should track the moon just fine.

I very rarely use SkyAlign, the manual methods seem easier and quicker and for some reason work better for me.

    Thanks Friends for your answers.

I will give this a go.

Mike very first time I used the scope sky align worked and I thought hey this is easy. Then next 5 times or so I couldnt get it to work. Then allowing for backlash and aligning in the same 2 directions ie right and up it worked again.

Id be interested to know about the manual method? Is this in the manual?

    thanks

I believe he is referring to the two star alignment. Use what works best for you.

Sorry for any confusion. By “manual” method, I meant any alignment method OTHER than SkyAlign. The only advantage I see with SkyAlign is that you don’t have to know the names of any of the objects you use for alignment. With a planisphere or a phone star chart app, identifying stars couldn’t be much easier. Plus, we’re talking about the moon here, so...

I’ll try this from memory, hopefully not much editing will be needed!

When you first power up, the hand control says hit ENTER to align, then gives alignment options. The default is SkyAlign. If you scroll down, you get other options- auto two star, two star, one star, solar system (plus some EQ options). To align using just the moon, select Solar System, then select Moon. Center in finder, hit enter, center in eyepiece, hit align, done.

The default tracking rate is sidereal. The moon moves very slowly relative to the background stars. Your scope can account for this by going to Menu(7), scrolling to Tracking, then Rate, select Lunar.

I would caution against doing this especially if you are going to at anything else. It is very easy to forget that you've done this and then you'll spend the next 2 nights pulling your hair out trying to figure out why nothing is tracking correctly!!! Not that I've ever done this.

No worries! Unless you keep your scope powered up. My 4 SE tracking rate resets to sidereal each time it is turned on.

It drives me mad I have to enter the same data each time, location, time, etc. etc.

Even cheap electronics seem to have built in batteries to hold information such as this in memory.

Although in this case it may be to our advantage!
