# Thread: Right ascension and declination

1. ## Right ascension and declination

Hi guys!
Could someone please explain to me what right ascension and declination mean in practical terms? I read somewhat about it but could not really understand the concept. I would really appreciate it if someone could give an example and explain how one would use right ascension and declination information to navigate the sky or know where an object is at what time.
Thanks a lot

Latitude=declination and Longitude= Right ascension, but RA is in hours, like time zones 24 hours= 360 degrees one day. Of course this is projected onto the sky rather than here on the ground.

Good question,
Steve

RA is longitude, DEC is latitude. projected on the sky.

RA is divided into 24hrs instead of 360, and counts UP from west to east.. the later the stuff rises, the later the hour (until you reach 24, then it restarts).

DEC is N/S 0-90 degrees, with 0 at the equator. DEC corresponds to the rotation of the earth and is basically the path of the stars through the sky.

RA and DEC are static, zero hour RA passes just west of Caph in cassiopeia.

One other thing. The Long and Lat of your location can be seen as being on a grid reference. When thinking of that grid reference one must realise there are two grids. The static grid of one's own coordinates of where one is at that moment. Say, on a map. The second is the grid that follows the movement of the stars. Its this second grid that you are interested in.
Just remember there are TWO grids and you will be fine
