Talking Skywatcher Startravel 102 Synscan az goto

    Hi all,

First of all i'd like to just say that i'm new to all of this but have recently been given a skywatcher startravel 102 and would like a bit of help with things. I don't really know what this telescope is capable of and what sort of things i can expect to achieve? (what i would be able to see and the quality etc...)

Also i would love to be able to view everything live on my laptop and take pictures of anything interesting so does anyone have any ideas on how i could set this sort of thing up and what i would need?

I have played around with the synscan goto tracker and managed to connect it to stellarium but i seem to just be looking around aimlessly so any advice on where to start would also be helpful!

    Thankyou
    Justin

Hi and welcome to the forums!

The 102 will show you plenty. All the bright DSO, open clusters and plenty of Globular clusters.
I use a DSLR with mine and do some short exposure astrophotography with it, see my blog link in my signature.

Once you have the scope alignment done take the night sky tour on the handset, this will start to give you a good idea of what to see.
You could also try shooting for the Messier list first, most of the bright DSO are within the 102's grasp.
These are all in Stellerium and should also be on the handset.

I have ST 102 and I'm rather happy with it. I've seen all the planets except Mercurius and seen good details on Jupiter and Saturn. I have a lot of light polution but the bright DSO are no problem. Andromeda, ring nebula, open clusters... If you have rather dark skies you can see the entire Messier list without much problems. This summer I'm going to buy a solar filter and watch the sun.
I have put my st102 on my AZ GTI (a bit the same like your synscan). Take your time for the alignment. Setup the scope horizontal. Double check if you aligning to the correct stars and make sure the star in centered.
