Default My nexstar 114gt handbox freezes on alignment

I just purchased a celestron nexstar 114gt. From various clues on the nexstar resource site, I dont believe it's the "original" gt handbox, as it has many features that are mentioned as upgrades from that original model. One issue.... Anytime I try to run alignment, the display either goes blank and unresponsive (with the red back light still on) after slewing to the first star in auto alignment. Or, if trying the other alignments that involve either picking star manually or slewing to the alignment star yourself, all goes well at first, the mount is responsive and operating perfectly from appearence. However, as soon as I've pressed enter to confirm it's in the viewfinder, the next step where I would center it in the eyepiece before pushing align to lock it in freezes the handbox completely just like the auto alignment, with the exception that instead of a blank but backlit screen, It displays the right text for that option, but is frozen on screen, unresponsive. Even the scrolling text on the second line is frozen in transit. In both these cases, the only possible way to restore function is to pull the power out. After which, it works again in every way..... Unless I try alignment. I really can't seem to find much of anything in terms of advice or other occurences of this issue. Could you please advise me with your deep Knowledge? My nightmare with the 497 autostar at least left me Impressed with the amount of 3rd party knowledge and resources etc. Available down to the inner workings. This handbox.... Not so much. Am I cursed!?
Ps: despite appearence of photos, the unit is still on with the red back light. The flash obscures it. Picture of "blank" display is result of auto align. Second is of frozen display after trying to confirm alignment of star 20161002_222520-1024x1820.jpg20161002_222446-1024x1820.jpg

Make sure you are using fresh alkaline batteries. Do not use NMH or NiCad, they do not provide enough voltage.
Other than that, you can try a factory reset.

I had almost identical problems with my brand new Skywatcher scope.
In the end a update of the firmware solved the issue.

Was it very much the same symptoms? Or just freezing in general? I must say, for all the headaches I had with the ds 2000 and 497 autostar, I was never quite as frustrated with the lack of information as I am with this nexstar. The more I read, the less confident I am in what I have. One article says the appearance of the logo on the handbox being orange vs a curved non orange beside celestron is the difference between the old style gt handbox (highly neutered with many known issues), versus the nexstar "4"/gt. Another says that is sometimes the case, but not always. No identifying marks. To add to this, I was comfortable I knew my mount model. 114gt. Although it's 1 model, I'm reading that there was what is referred to as the" Costco " model. An identically branded gt that used some slt mount parts that may be incompatible with some handboxes

Mine is a synscan goto controller which looks very much the same.
If I took too long with the alignments it would freeze up much like yours does now. And when I say too long I mean anything more than a minute, minute and a half!
If you rushed the alignment it would continue to work well after that, but rushed alignments were not that good!

Updating to the latest firmware for the handset sorted the problem.
As for the celestron mounts/scopes I am not to familiar with them and will let others comment there.

I also have this scope. Make sure when you power it on the display says "NEXSTAR READY". Also reconfirm the correct Nexstar model is selected in the options.

Other than that, I agree about reflashing the firmware.

Have you looked at which firmware version you have on the hand controller already? That will determine which HC you actually have. After that if it is a programmable one you can do any updates/ reflashing that is required.
There are a lot of different options available for the Nexstar HC, on my SLT I run the NXS firmware from the CPC scopes which gives me all the available catalogs and a few extra options.

I am actually using a 12v power adapter. It is however a non oem one that has the selectable voltage, but the operation and everything including the slewing shows no signs of issues except for the align freezes

I tried to check the version, only to find that the option is missing from the utilities and I can't locate it anywhere

Your power adapter is questionable and these mounts are very picky, I would remove that possibility by powering with a 12v battery, I use an automotive jump box. Have you tried the factory reset? If that doesn't work, updating the firmware should.
