Default Buying an Orion scope on Amazon Prime

I will be ordering my new Orion XT12g next week, and I just noticed that I can also order it through Amazon Prime rather than directly from Orion. It will be nice to have it sent with free 2 day shipping.

Has anyone had any experience ordering from Amazon rather than directly from the company? I know the scope comes in multiple boxes and I am wondering if I receive anything damaged, will I have to return everything back to Amazon for a replacement rather than just the damaged part?

I have also read complaints on here that Orion will not offer support for their products if it is the second owner. I am buying new, but if it is not purchased direct from Orion, will they still offer support and the same warranty? The seller on Amazon does say it's Orion, I'm just curious if there is any policy changes if purchased there rather than the direct website.

I have no problem waiting the 1 - 2 weeks for Orion to ship me the new scope, but if I have the option to get it 2nd day, I would like to go that route as long as I am not losing any support or warranty. Has anyone does this before and give some feedback before I place my order?

    Thanks!

I think your best course of action would be to call Orion and ask them directly how returns/ warranty works in that situation so you make sure your covered properly.

right, I already plan to do that tomorrow when they are open again. I just wanted to hear people from here's experiences.. Because we have all been told one thing by a company, and then something else when we go to act on it....

Orion has always had a good return/exchange policy, though it changes somewhat from time to time. Today it is-

We stand behind our products and services. If for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with your purchase from Orion Telescopes & Binoculars, just return the item(s) in new condition within 30 days after delivery for a prompt refund, less shipping and handling charges. No restocking charges, no hassles

Amazon has an easy return policy.

The price delivered to you is the same-- free.

Both companies can generate prepaid shipping labels if you return it, and both treat the cost of shipping it back the same way.

You might think that the extra shipping involved (Orion to Amazon) may increase the chance of shipping damage. It does not, because almost certainly the scope is either shipped directly from China to Amazon or travels from Orion on a pallet. Once it starts the trip to you it will make many stops, be unloaded many times and be treated with the same disdain by the shippers.

Orion is a small US company owned by a bigger one. Amazon is a large US company.

If you call Amazon you call may be answered in the Philippines. If you call Orion your call is answered by Orion.

Who do you prefer to call?

I was quite satisfied with Orion's handling of a return. I am quite satisfied with the way Amazon handles returns.

Not sure what's it like in the states but I ordered my f4 Orion via Amazon UK and as usual delivery was dead on time and the scope was in perfect order, well until I collimated it for the first time.

The few times I've called Orion for support the first thing they did was to check that I'd purchased the item from them. Oh, and they've always taken good care of me.

There are people who have had trouble getting support because they did not buy directly from Orion. I hope they are not so restrictive on that now, but I can understand why they might be.

    1. The price you pay will likely be the same whether you buy from Orion or from an Orion dealer.
    2. Orion has to pay a set price to the manufacturer and then there is a price increment for the costs of maintaining inventory, for personnel, for physical plant costs, etc. But someone is also going to have to pay the costs of providing support.
    3. If you buy directly from Orion they have built all those costs into the price you pay to them.
    4. If you buy from Amazon they are going to have to sell it for a lower price to Amazon so that Amazon can make a profit for re-selling to you at approximately the same price. This makes it a little difficult to justify providing support to you since all the other costs likely still exist.

So you insist that your dealer provide the support. Amazon is not going to give you much support so I want Orion to be happy to support me and I'll buy directly from them.

Companies which are tightly integrated with the manufacturer (like Synta/Celestron/Sky-Watcher or JOC/Explore Scientific) don't have quite the same challenge and are thus more likely to support you if you purchase from a dealer.

However, I'd probably at least take a look at the Sky-Watcher collapsible version. Both are made by Synta and will be functionally similar other than the collapsible nature of the Sky-Watcher. That collapsible nature means increased attention to collimation but also means you have better transportability and (if you ever want to use a DSLR with the thing) a higher probability of achieving prime focus by the simple expedient of not fully extending the OTA. I don't know if that makes it a good choice for you but I figured it ought to at least briefly cross your mind.

Yes the first question out of an Orion support person will be "Did you purchase it directly from us". Honestly I don't know what happens if the answer is no.

Orion is usually the supplier and your usually buying right from them indirectly and Amazon is supplying it from a warehouse. I've purchased many things through Amazon from Orion's Amazon page no issues ever. I'm very satisfied.Warranty situations go through Orion directly. Returns would go through Amazon unless it's past the return policy.

If the answer is "No" then the support is "No". Can't say that I blame them and I do business with them. But there are other vendors who have been helpful and offered support on things I didn't buy from them and I always go to them first if that is an option on a specific piece of equipment.
