    Default New Telescope

Hey folks, need some help. Just got a new telescope for Xmas. Its an older used telescope that was handed down to me. I cant seem to find out any information on it like the type of telescope or any instructions on how to work it or clean it. Any information on this would be awesome. The telescope is Orbitor 4000. Thanks in advance!

Looks like a Newtonian reflector that originally came on a light weight equatorial mount. There are instructions here on the forum for cleaning but that should only be done because of extreme circumstances, quite a bit of dust will still not hurt anything. Do you have any eyepieces and the mount?

Yea I have the eye pieces and the mount. Looks like there might have been some type of motorized mount. So I think its missing that part but everything else works and I can adjust the mount fine. Looks like there are 4 lenses. I have concerns because the actual telescope hasnt been capped and stored so there might be a ton of dust and dirt built up.

I googled your telescope. It looks like a big box store telescope, (Walmart, Sporting Goods Store). It IMO is a bad telescope you will be lucky if you see anything with it. As far as cleaning it, you should be able to clean the outside with a rag, as for the optics no it doesn't look like you can take it apart, but then again if I wasn't experienced with telescopes I wouldn't do that. For free hey you can't beat free, maybe it will get you interested in astronomy and you will want to upgrade to a better scope in the future... If you have kids invest a little money, lets say $100 to $150, in a better scope and it will pay off more then you would have ever thought..

Many of these scopes have a .965" focuser. If it does you will have a hard time finding any quality eyepieces for the scope. I would suggest a .965" to 1.25" adapter so you can use 1.25" EPs if that is the case. Carefully clean any cobwebs and such that may be in the tube without touching either mirror surface, try to carefully blow off any dust if you can, and stop there with any attempts to clean anything at least until you see what the view looks like. During the day (like now) try to use the lowest power eyepiece you have (the one with the biggest number) and focus on a distant object. Try that and tell us how it looks.

I suggest if at all possible go to a local star party and see first hand several different scopes before you buy anything. Different scopes are good at one thing and maybe not so good at another. A lot of beginners like the AstroMaster 130eq but some are disappointed with it. For the beginner most of the time I recommend an 8" Dob but not always as there are many factors to consider.

Before you start investing significant money, please take the advice of Ozman13 and first go to a few star parties. You will learn a huge amount about what you like, want, need, and what suits you.

Until you've gone to the star parties you and we are shooting blindly in guessing what will suit you.

The default is the 8" Dobsonian, but it may not suit you.
