Default I have an old Orion DSE 6" and child asking "when are you gonna fix the telescope?"

I saw a couple of posts about vintage 6" Orion DSE. An uncle gave me one any years back. I used it for a couple of years then stored it away. I see lots of dust on the primary. Do I dare disassemble that end and give it the cleaning it needs? I've viewed some videos on careful handling and cleaning so I think I could tackle that. My focuser is just a crude thread arrangement that moves the eyepc in and out. Should I / can I upgrade that? Can I collimate without buying a laser tool? Some You_Tubers seem to get by with an eyepc. insert. The teen did a science report on the Seven Sisters and now is full of astronomy questions. I really want to encourage & feed the interest ASAP! Thanks in advance for anything that might help…. Les

Hello and welcome to the forums, Les!

Sounds like a fun project for you and/or the teen. The focuser sounds like it is a rack-and-pinion style. It may need cleaned and re-greased, but then again, it may work fine as is. There are other focusers you can buy and install (the crayford-style is popular and works well), but you need to make sure it aligns properly with the optical path. I collimated my 8" dob for years using nothing but an old film canister with a pinhole in it. A laser collimator is handy, but not strictly necessary. The scope is just collecting dust right now, anyway. You don't have anything to lose by fiddling with it and trying to get it up and going again.

The primary mirror should be a doddle. Just handle using the non mirrored surface. Use the film can to collimate.
The focuser can be replaced but need not be.

Don't let the primary mirror cleaning intimidate you. Just take note of what was required to remove it so when you put it back in you know where everything goes.

    The cleaning part is easy.
