no , the auto align product is called StarSense , it's expensive at 3/4 the cost of the 127slt and even then you still need to align that camera and the scope to point parallel to the same star.

it will speed things up though... the wifi will use your phone's GPS and time and date, so all you need to do is turn it on, synch your wifi, slew to a few alignment stars and your good to go. When I align the Evo (which uses the wifi that Celestron sells as an extra for the Nexstars) it takes me less than five minutes. If it takes longer than 3-4 minutes it probably means Ive been drinking. Alot.

If this is true..then in my opinion why spend the money... It takes me less then 3 minutes to align my 8i which I travel with to local star parties (about a 30 mile trip to my clubs dark site) and I no longer even bother to take my CN-16 GPS unit with me...it just not take a heck of a lot of time to enter the time and date manually and the location is still close enough not to affect my GoTo's to any significant degree ... I am not even sure if I would use the wifi connection IF I had one mainly because I had my scope in my observatory directly wired to my computer in the observatory and found that it actually was more work using the computer to control the scope then it was when I just used the HC ...

When the time comes (if it ever comes) I am thinking I'll replace the 8i with an EVo 8 for traveling BUT only because it has much much better gears then my 8i (or an 8se). The wifi feature to be honest just is not that useful to me... The only thing I would have to verify is that the EVO 8 would mount on my spare CPC1100's tripod like my 8i does which I think it will.. I not reached the point of wanting to replace the 8i with a nearly identical OTA just for the better gears...

    Just my own personal opinion...

because your only thinking of it in the context of controlling the scope and initial alignment. Using the phone for those things is pretty gimmicky. I only use the HC to move the scope. Its just easier. My phone is the map, the HC drives it and my watches.

But the wifi isnt about controlling the scope, its about integrating your scope and your astronomy applications. That is NOT gimmicky. I have an interactive encyclopedia with images and info attached to the scope. I can make notes and save them later. There is no better way to plan a viewing session for me that get out there, guage seeing and go from there. I can then adjust my map for visual magnitude and dont bother to show me what I cant resolve any way. I can look at tonights best. I can create a viewing sessions then just point and click to goto my items. Bob there are a 1000 things that integrating your scope and computer/tablet/phone apps can open up for you.

But Im glad you asked... Its a slow friday. This has "create new thread" written all over it.

I have to agree with you Mike. I much prefer the phone setup over the hand control. Makes finding the stars easier for this beginner as I can compare the night sky to the phone app in compass mode. And I can view so much more by just clicking it on the view screen and hit goto and im there, rather than trying to navigate the hand controller that I find difficult to use. The fact it uploads gps, date and time, automatically to your mount is just a bonus, but makes things so much simpler.

Ok...I'll take those functions into account BUT I highly doubt that I'll make use of it the way I structure my observation sessions because I only observe 4-5 objects in a night and I spend a minimum of 30 minutes on each swapping eyepeices and taking notes and I know exactly what objects I will be viewing each night before I even step into the observatory...

ANYHOW... I did learn a thing of two so THANK YOU Mike...appreciate your input....

This is what they call "Observing". I like your style. One should know what they are looking for before even turning on the scope. Phones are just plain bad for night vision also. Might as well shine a flash light in your face before going to the EP.

Except that I put it on night vision mode before I ever leave the house, and have the phone dimmed to its lowest setting as well. So to each their own on how they observe. I'm just a casual observer for now, and the beauty I see is stored in my memory rather than pad and pen. Although I have jotted down a few notes about items I really liked looking at and wanted to return to in the future.
