Default Green Laser or any laser point - question

I have heard of people using the green lasers to find objects, but I am concerned about the legality of it in my area.

I live under an approach route to Logan Airport, depending on wind direction, the jets fly directly over my house at about 6,000 feet and I keep hearing stories of people flashing jets and getting arrested. I really don't want to go to jail for astronomy.

Are they legal? Again I worry that some over zealous pilot, cop, or neighbor would turn me in.

They work great but personally I would not take the chance of using one under an airport approach path, regardless of whether or not it is legal.

Laser pointers can "blind" a pilot and cause a accident.
Hence the law taking a tough stance on the use of such devices in the vicinity of aircraft of any sort.
So I would not chance it from your location.

They can also be very useful astronomy instruments if used in a responsible manner and preferably at a dark sky site with no aircraft about.

    Cheers

Not illegal to use them. But shining one on an aircraft is. I wouldn't risk it

When I setup my scope, it's under the north-east path to SEA-TAC airport.
I have a few green laser pointers, but only use them after making sure that the skies are clear of aircraft.

I sure hope they stay legal! I'm not on any obvious flight path so I use one every time I set up. I drift align. Then when I do a 1 star align of the mount I slew to the star, lately vega, slap the pointer in a side grove in the losmandy rail on top of my scope and use the HC to drive the beam to the target. Generally less than a minute. That is good enough to get my ~2000mm scope in the field of a 35mm EP. I would hate to have to poke around the sky with the HC searching for the star without that initial laser guided alignment --- it would add a long time to my set up <G> Sorry to say, this is probably too risky for you and the pilots. While the probability of hitting the cockpit without trying to do so is probably pretty low, it does not seem to be worth the risk and I'd hate to have to try to convince the cop who followed the beam to my house that I was not up to no good.

With all the problems caused by idiots pointing lasers at plane, I'm afraid that even if you don't point it at a plane, someone who may see it, (pilot or citizen) may call it in. Not worth taking the chance.

    I like your SASS handle.

Thank you! My youngest son, I have 3 boys, is a lefty and his SASS handle is, drum roll, Joe Cartwright. We actually got them both. Oh and my middle guy is heavy set and I have white hair. I have done much with SASS lately due to bad knees but am keeping the handle! Many people I should have gotten Hoss (which was my nickname at one time) but it was taken, this shot is a few years ago and I have all white hair now and look older but you can see where my middle son gets his build from.
