    Default play in eyepiece adapter

    Hi all.
I am trying to do collimation on my skywatcher explorer 130p and i've noticed some play in the adapter which goes into the focuser. It seems to rock up and, side to side. There is no play in the eyepiece to adapter, or in the focuser itself. Its the same for the 2" and 1.25" adapters supplied.
It seems worse with the cheshire in place. Is this normal and would this effect the collimation?
    many thanks.

That's a fast scope (f/5). You gotta get that play out of there to ensure a good collimation.

I've used that thin aluminum tape before. It's actually aluminum "foil" with "stickem" on the back... Ace Hardware store. It's a pain to work with, but often will "shim" just enough to work.

Hey Buzz--I have the same setup with my 130SLT,and because the 2 locking screws on the focuser can't rotate it always pushes the adapters to the same place in the focuser barrel---It feels really loose, but in actuality there is only 15 thousandths of an inch difference in diameter-And there should be at least another 5 thou diff between the adapter and eyepiece-If your really picky about the slop both in the adapter to focuser and the eyepiece to adapter--Like Me--You can orient the looking screws on both the focuser and adapter with each other to insure that everything is repeatable as far as which direction and final location everything is pushed to----Collimate and Enjoy-------------------------ZX

I have some of this tape and will try it. Many thanks
Just seems strange to have this play from new.

Call it mass production at its finest--What got me is 2 adapters--Other focusers have a 2 inch barrel and only 1 adapter for the 1.25 eyepieces--My only qualm with the tape is that the adapters only have a 1/8th inch(3.17mm) bearing surface, with the rest severely undercut at 45 degrees to where the looking screws make contact--The tape being 1 to 2 thousandths thick means 3 to 6 wraps is going to be needed with the tape cut at pin stripe width--May be hard to keep it in place--Compression of the aluminium tape is a non issue--Back in my youth we use to back up our rod and main caps on our small block V8's with aluminium foil to get bearing clearance down to a minimum and then install a high pressure oil pump to really get the revs up in small town USA on Saturday night--Repeat ability is what is needed--

I have to tell ya Buzz,My biggest gripe is the amount of play in the plastic focuser housing/tube itself--I tried using a laser collimator, but it was so heavy that it canted the focuser throwing everything off--Even with everything snugged up,I could, with very little pressure make the laser dot dance on the primary--Now I just extend the focuser about 1/2 way out, lock it down-Orientate the adapter, lock it down and then install my Cheshire--Star test always look good and the scope perform surprisingly well---------------ZX
