    Default older camera, new laptop

I'm looking to get started in astrophotography. I've had a canon rebel xt for years and hoping to use it. I've been reading about backyard eos. It seems to be the goto software for AP with a dslr. I was pleased to see it supports my camera. Well almost, I got a new laptop last month, it runs 64 bit windows 8 and does not support my older camera. I'm able to connect the camera to a tv and display pictures to aid in focusing, but I was hoping to use my laptop. Any ideas?

You are out of luck. Canon has stated that they will never make a 64-bit driver for the older models. That means that there is no way that any software on 64-bit windows will ever talk to the camera. Bummer, I know. I have a 350D (not sure if that is the same thing as the XT), and I have the same problem.

The only thing you can do is to put the camera's USB output in the mode that is intended for downloading to printers. In that mode, Windows will see the camera as a disk drive, and you can access the files on the memory card.

Run Windows XP in a VM. Check out Forget The End Of Life Woes: Windows 8 Has An XP Mode for details. This should work.

Looks like I have a reason to get a new camera . MikeWest, thanks for the link. Even if I could get BYE to run, my camera doesn't have a live view feature. I'm thinking a 700d/T5i may be the ticket.

    Thx

XP Mode (or another type of VM) won't work for this.
