Default Infinity 114 mm EQ at Goodwill for $30

I was dropping off some items at Goodwill for a donation when I noticed a telescope that someone had dropped off. It was an Infinity (now Meade?) 114mm reflector on an older equatorial mount (has setting circles). At only $29.99 I figured I'd take the risk knowing nothing of the scope. It had no eyepieces and the focuser was smaller than the 1 1/4" eyepieces I have. I did find a converter online that will accept 1 1/4" eyepieces. Anyone know anything about this scope? It looks like a budget scope but the mount is what I was interested in. It also looks much sturdier than what Meade currently sells. I figured it might be a fun backyard scope to view the planets and brighter deep sky objects (on those nights I don't feel like lugging the 65 lb dob out). I've never used an EQ mount before. Can anyone point out where I can find instructions on the setting circles? Other than dust and missing eye pieces, this was in really good shape. Is it worth putting a motor drive on this (and if so, what would you recommend)?

Probably a decent deal at $30. I'm not sure I'd bother upgrading it, but I doubt a motor would cost much (if you could find one to fit) so why not?

It sounds like your focuser probably accepts 0.965" eyepieces. You can get inexpensive 0.965" eyepieces here: Eyepieces - Telescope Warehouse Also diagonals, adapters, and diagonal adapters.

    Have fun!

I've had this scope for three weeks now. I see a bunch of these on ebay/Craigslist for sale for $60-100. I suspect that folks buy these "entry-level" scopes with high expectations . . . however, the GEM was a little tough to figure out having never used one before. I suspect these folks get discouraged after the first night. It's actually a capable scope. I did some repairs: cleaned a ton of dust off the mirror and the inside of the tube. I added a dot on the primary mirror to make collimation easier. I purchased a budget red-dot finder to replace the plastic crap finder that came with it, a plossl 32mm eyepiece, and a .9" to 1.25" adapter. I also tuned up the gears. I must admit, I've been having a lot of fun with this scope. It's not going to wow anyone at a star party and it's a poor comparison to my 10" dob. However, the views are much better than my little 90mm Mak-Cas and there is very little cool down time. I think I have a keeper.

Nice, all I seem to find at these stores are used clothing, which is not bad, I got an antique wool woolrich coat which I consider an astronomy equipment purchase . 4.5 inch reflectors are capable scopes, more light grasp then the 90 and wider field too, I use my 90 mak for travel and quick moon viewing, its a good solid scope.

Enjoy your new find, and yes you rescued a scope and adopted a scope

Your find sounds very similar to the Meade 4.5" scope that I found on Kijiji. With 1.25" Plossls it give quite nice views especially from dark skies.
