Default Fitting a Telrad to a Skywatcher 8 inch collapsible Dobsonian

    Greetings to all,
I have fitted my electric focuser to my dob. I think it will be a valuable addition to my kit. Haven't had a chance to use it yet with the cloudy nights just lately! Now thinking about my Telrad. It seems a bit big but the only useful place on my scope is between the 'cross' knurled nut and the finderscope. Trouble is, I have to move the Telrad forward so it's just poking over the lip of the edge by an inch so I can access the alignment knobs easily. I plan to use high density foam rubber to pad out the gap caused by the lip ring and secure the Telrad base with two long hefty zip ties. At the moment I have secured it by using masking tape until I have used it in the field. I will be able to see if this placement is good or not. It seems to me to be the only place available. The scope certainly looks a mean piece of kit with all the stuff on it. Does anyone else have any ideas about placement and securing the Telrad? I don't really want to drill holes in the tube. Also I want to use the original finderscope for locating fainter objects. BTW I managed to get out first time with the dob and look at the Orion Nebula - it took my breath away. I have sent away for a cheap webcam (50mb) with a view to adapting it for the 1.25 eyepiece. I came across a great web site for identifying objects in the night sky at your site location www.calsky.com. Great print outs and I can use them for observer taskings for the night. Clear skies to all!

    Welcome to the Forum.

I use a heavy duty 3m product which is a type of velcro on steroids. In USA sells for about $5 a package which is good to mount 3-5 items. The velcro material is a white/opaque color and listed as heavy duty. The fingers of the velcro are quite stiff. It can easily support 3-5 lbs.

My imaging amp and dew controller on my lx are mounted with this product in image below. They do not move at all.

One side has an adhesive, other side has what I call strong plastic velcro hooks. It can be removed with care and rubbing alcohol or spirits, possibly carefully with heat gun used in moderation to loosen adhesive. I mounted mine on the LX in 2003 and they are still there strong as ever 11 years later.

I just ordered "VELCRO Brand - All Purpose Straps - 27" x 1" All Purpose Strap - Elastic, 2 Ct. - Black" from amazon for my 8" SCT, which I don't want use sticky tape on, and drilling is out of the question. I'm hoping it will be the solution and allow me to move as necessary. Will let you know if it works out.

Thanks for that. I am thinking that the rubber pad under the Telrad and a couple of velcro straps with a buckle tightener will do the trick. I have found the item at our local hardware store. Failing that I have a couple of extra long zip ties. Ever since the Telrad was delivered it has been cloudy!

I received these straps today...fit is perfect. Holds the Telrad tight to the 8" scope tightly via elastic stretched about 2" past static. Almost like these were made for this:
