Default DGM Optics NPB Nebula Filter. Best DSO filter?

I've read on several websites that, "This is the filter to have if you only own one!". True or just the results of a good marketing team at DGM Optics? I hope it's not just hype. I just ordered one (not my only filter, but I don't have a vast selection either). I'm hoping it will help me take high contrast images of DSO's.

Default Re: DGM Optics NPB Nebula Filter. Best DSO filter?

The DGM NPB is bascially a narrow band UHC filter, in the same class as the Orion Ultra Block. Not to be confused with wide band UHC filters, such as the Orion Sky Glow, Baader UHC-S, or Celestron UHC/LPR. Those are marketed as light pollution filters, and are not nebula filters. LP filter utility is subtle at best for visual use, and work best in areas of low to moderate LP.

I agree that the narrow band UHC is the best logical choice for someone wishing to sample what a filter can do for them. They have the widest general use amongst various types of nebulae, and are a little less aggressive than the O-III, darkening the field less. As I am sure you are aware of, these filters don't work by actually boosting the brightness of the target objects, rather they work by blocking light frequencies outside their pass band. This gives the perception that the targets are brighter, when in reality its the dimming of the other light sources (such as star light) that gives that visual impression.

Anyway, I have had my Orion Ultra Block for a few years. It was bought before the DGM NPB came out. I am quite happy with my Orion UB, and therefore have no need for the DGM, but if I were in need of a filter, I would seriously consider the NPB as a very strong candidate.

    Hello Sagan,

the DGM is one of the new companies on the filter market for the hobby astronomy, and certainly not a bad choice, as the technologies of the interference filters are continuously improving. We have also a thread on the filters Nebular filters for visual observations: some useful links and infos, which receives updates on the experience with the filters, as shared by our members.

    Congrats to your filter purchase,

    JG

    Hello Alan,

we have been at the Mosel river banks at Mülheim, hiking the wineyards, and drinking the Sonnenlay wines, famous as the fine wines sereved on the Zeppelin transatlantic flights around 1930, Mülheimer Sonnenlay

    An observing report will follow.

    Clear skies,

Great JG, sounds like a very nice and relaxing holiday. Were they serving that on the Hindenberg when it went down in New Jersey in 1937? Looking forward to your report.

... well, I take it for granted. That's why we went to pick up a gasket of Sonnenlay bottles from House Bartz - they don't sell wine to Lufthansa transatlantic flights.

Back to the filters. The yesterday night over my backyard has been really very clear, the 25x100 binoculars have shown some highlights even without any filters: the Wolf Rayet nebula Sh2-157 (Cep/Cas border), the Valentin's Heart Sh2-190 (IC1805), and the Pacman NGC281 (IC1590), besides about 3 dozens of the usual celestial wonders.

    Best,

    JG
