Default Brand Names (Orion, Meade,Skywatcher, Celestron, etc.) and your experience.

Beforehand, I know there will be a lot of variance (obvious from most signatures), but from personal experience which brand name are you most supportive of? I feel a premature affinity for the maker of my first scope Celestron btw-imprinting more than likely, similar to baby geese.

Trying to do much more research and advice seeking now that I know of this wonderful place. I'm only going to last a few more weeks before upgrading.
    Celestron 127 EQ Powerseeker, standard 4mm and 20mm EP's. Celestron 8 to 24mm 1.25 Zoom Eyepiece.

I have absolutely no brand loyalty at all. Especially not when it comes to telescope and mounts. Most of the common brands are made in the same factory. Very often, they are the exact same models with just a different paint job and manufacturer's sticker.

I like my Orion Astrograph, but Skywatcher sells the exact same scope. I like my Skywatcher HEQ5, but the Orion Sirius is the identical mount.

The telescope manufacturers are probably not as loyal to you as you may be to them. I used to really like Meade and have a lot invested in them, but they've not been behaving like a company that is trying to attract and retain consumers or build quality products. I thought Celestron was better... but then learned they have horror stories of their own.

I've come to realize that you probably don't want to be loyal to a product just because of it's brand name... sometimes one model is fantastic and another is junk. You've really got to look carefully into the product you are thinking about getting.

The good news is many components come in standard sizes that are interchangeable. Any 1.25" or 2" size eyepiece should fit into any telescope with a 1.25" or 2" seat (which is the overwhelming majority of them.) If you want to buy a separate mount vs. scope, the dovetails are also fairly standardized with the Vixen style and Losmandy style -- so it's not really a problem. This means most of the time you can buy the mount you really want, the scope you really want, and the eyepieces you really want and all three could be different brands.

Hi Cace. I have to agree completely with Keith and Tim. It would seem that most of the telescope brands come out of the same one or two plants. There may be some difference in the paint job, the re-seller's demand of specifications or tolerances of the product, and the included accessories in the package. It usually comes down to finding the right model for your intentions, the right price, and most importantly, the reputation of the brand's CUSTOMER SERVICE policy after the sale. I hope this helps cace, and best wishes on your future telescope purchase.

Agreed with all the above, plus the extra caveat that the final brand does also affect how the product is distributed in the US, thus affects what retailers carry them, and their final retail price.

But for the brands in this thread title, for sure Synta is making most of Sky watcher, Celestron, and Orion's products (and Synta owns the first two brands to boot). Not sure who is making Meade (GSO?).

I happen to have 3 Skywatchers, but not because of brand loyalty, they just happened to be the right price at the right time at the budget end of the 'decent scope' market. If I was shopping with a bit more cash, I would be after something better which may be a different brand, the best for whatever it wanted to use it for. I am happy with the performance of my scopes for my level of skill and would probably be just as happy with any of the other well known brands too!

I guess it all boils down to what you want from the equipment you wish to purchase. That's one reason why many of us spend quite a bit of time researching specifications, and of course, whatever accessories might come with that main purchase. I bet there are plenty out there who purchased an OTA from one company, and their mount from another, and their eyepieces from yet a third, etc., etc.

Your best bet is to ask questions about a particular thing you are looking to purchase, getting ideas, opinions, and whatever, then making your own decision on the product, and not the manufacturer/brand name.

    Good luck on your journey.

Hmmm.... I really like the very high quality kit from Takahashi and Televue.

Both Meade and Celestron can make good optics - and both have had issues.

With a lot of stuff being made in China these days, with the mid range brands it's more about customer support... Which can vary depending on where in the world you are.

Personally, I have (or had) a fairly wide mix of brands over the years... Including Atik, Meade, Celestron, Vixen, William Optics, Takahashi, Orion, Skywatcher, Televue, Baader.

If I had a big lottery win i'd probably indulge in some nice Takahashi and Televue goodies , otherwise it'd probably be down to a good price and decent support...

I used to be a big Meade fan, basically if it wasn't meade then I didn't really want to know!!! This seems quite foolish now. I don't really have a particular loyalty now. I currently have a skywatcher scope with celestron eyepieces and a bresser Barlow.
The interesting thing is the Bresser Barlow is the 2" telextender which I thought was a clone of the Meade model, however the box it came in says Bresser and in smaller letters Meade which demonstrates that many of these things are made in the same factory just with different brand names.
I understand that the new Skywatcher Sky Panorama eyepieces are actually Celestron Luminos eyepieces optically, although I might be wrong on that one.
