Default Help with info on Bahtinov mask

I've been seeing many people that use these Bahtinov masks, I see the unique design which is interesting as well.
I have a 5 inch Mak 127 SLT, would this Bahtinov mask help in cutting down LP or is the prime function to line up objects better?
Would I benefit from using one & how does it work?
Can I put one over my Astro Zap heated dew shield or does it require being placed on the end of my scope?
As always, I sincerely appreciate all the great input from this forum!!

The Bahtinov mask only improves your focusing. Once you have focused your instrument you remove it.

And yes, you can put it over the dew shield - should not be a problem.

As OleCuss said, it is only used for focusing. When viewing with an eyepiece, it is faster, more convenient, and perfectly adequate to just focus by eye. The Bahtinov mask is used mostly when imaging, when you need to get an accurately focused image on the camera without being able to see through the eyepiece.

    Ah I get it Keith!
Then this Bahtinov mask will be on my list as centering an object for imaging is key.
    Thanks a bunch OleCuss too!!

^^It's only for focus. For centering, you need a reticle EP, or just use use the crosshairs in your imaging software. During alignment (without a reticle EP), you just bring your alignment stars out of focus until they look like doughnuts that take up a large portion of the FOV... then once 'centered', switch to a higher magnification & repeat...
