Default Celestron X-Cel LX 3x Barlow

Anyone have experience with this 3x Barlow?

I have a 2x Barlow from the Celestron eyepiece kit. Should I just stick to that?

    Thanks!

What Barlow you would use would depend on which eye pieces that you currently own. In, I believe, most cases there is not much need of a 3X Barlow. More information on your setup would be needed.

Hi Bill! Thank you for the response!

    Here's my EP kit:
Eyepiece and Filter Kit 1.25 in [item # 94303]

However, the intended purpose is more to do with planetary webcam photography; in particular, I'm hoping to enlarge the apparent size of Saturn for my ASI120MC.

Mainly I'm just wondering if this fancy "X-Cel" line is optically superior to the 2x that came in my kit, and if so, whether it would be a worthwhile addition to the rig.

    Thanks again!

    Hi
The 4SE is 102mm/1325mm F13 scope. The 102mm gives a theoretical max magnification of 204 (2xaperture in mm) on a good night seeing conditions.
Your 6mm will give 221X (1325/6) so even given that Maks can take a bit of magnification 220 is probably the most you are going to try.
This makes a 3x barlow superfluous. Barlows are useful for getting the euivalent of a short eyepiece but keeping the better eyerelief of a longer EP. Your 2X will do this nicely on your 13mm (giving 6.5mm equivalent) - so I wouldn't bother.

This is the Barlow that I have in the 2X version. I bought it for the same reason that you are considering it's big brother, but have difficulty in achieving focus. I'm thinking of selling it on. ( hopefully it will buy me a clear night. )

I was looking to do the same thing and buy a 3x for imaging with webcam but as Tillibobs pointed in another thread there is a simple way to use your 2x barlow and get more magnification. Put your barlow in the scope first, then the diagonal, then the camera. I did this the other night on Jupiter and it changed Jupiter from being about the size of a golf ball on my screen to the size of almost a Tennis ball. So I'm not sure how much more of True magnification it is but it worked. And the seeing conditions and location of Jupiter was not great for imaging so the image was larger but the detail and image quality was not good. I'm going to try it again when ever all this rain leaves and we have a clear night so I can see if I can achieve detail and quality in Jupiter by doing that way or not. Something to try anyways before you spend more money on another barlow that you may not need.

I would just use the 2X kit Barlow. I have the kit Barlow but I have never used it and I don't have the other one. The X-CEL Barlow is probably superior but I would doubt that is is worth the upgrade. As has been pointed out, you don't need a 3X Barlow unless it is for the web cam. I have several X-CEL EP's and I like them. I had a couple of them, then I bought a scope that came with several of them. So now I have a lot of them. I have some duplicates now so it is probably time to buy a Bino viewer.
