Default Plan to buy celestron 102slt. need advice on eyepiece, filters to go with it..

hi, i am nearly decided on the celestron 102slt. I have decided to go for a power pack as well also as that seems to be something one would need with the goto gobbling up batteries.
The Scope comes with 9mm and 25 mm eyepeice and a star diagonal. Since the scope is short tube refractor i have learnt that the eyepiece needs to be a good one in order to minimize the CA. Also a filter of some sort.
Need help regarding what are the ideal accesories like eyepeice, barlow, filter and what else i would need along with it.
    thanks

You will want a Moon filter.

    The accessories to start with?

    An eyepatch.
    An observing chair.
A dim red headlamp or flashlight.
A small table to put stuff on.
A cheap rug to put under your stuff to cushion things when they fall - and make them easier to find.

Hold off on the eyepieces for a little while. Use what you've got and go to star parties so that you get to try out a bunch of stuff and learn what you like.

Eyepiece choice is very personal - even with the same scope you get good people liking very different eyepieces. Waiting for a month or two and learning what you like and dislike can save you a ton of money and get you the eyepieces you actually like.

I would get a eyepiece between your 9mm and 25mm something in the 13-18mm range would be good. I bought a Jump starter for my SLT mount and it has been working great so far..it has AC and DC outlets along with a USB port..would be better then the over priced Celestron power packs. Also you might want to make yourself a small Dew shield possibly. This stuff along with what OleCuss suggested you would be set.

I would wait on the Barlow - others wouldn't.

I would try the scope first and see if you are bothered by the aberration before you buy a filter to try to fix it. There's a good chance that you will some day want a minus violet filter, but there's no great need to get one now. I've got a fast 80mm achromat - and I generally don't use it on very bright objects so I've never been all that bothered and have never gotten the filter.

Light pollution filters are a little more interesting. I don't bother with one and some folk say that they are not a good idea on smaller scopes like your 102mm. Others say that they are worthwhile for any size objective.

But filters and eyepieces are likely not the most important items for you to get. Things like the red light, the chair, the eyepatch, the rug, etc. will likely do more for your enjoyment in the short-term.

With the exceptions of a Moon filter and Nebula filter the rest are very rarely used. They are just a way of filling the salesman's pockets.
It seems natural that people new to Astronomy want to try to improve their viewing experience before they have learnt the quirks of their telescope. Put any improvements on the back burner for a few weeks and teach yourself things like averted vision. You will then know for yourself what items would come in useful.

I agree with the advice to take is slow buying eyepieces. Filters, except for a moon filter, are most likely a waste of money. An observing chair and power source are more important at the moment. Many of us use automotive jump start batteries like this. Half the price and twice as good as any telescope company's power pack.

The 102SLT, at f/6.5, is a medium speed telescope. It will be good for both planets and deep space. The 102SLT is not noted for having major problems with chromatic aberration for viewing. Enjoy it.

Regarding chromatic aberration, the quality of the objective lens is more important than eyepieces. I use the same Meade series 4000 eyepieces for my f/13 MAK as I do for my f/5 refractor. Chromatic aberration is a problem with only one of them and I highly suspect that it is a knock-off and not a real Meade 4000 eyepiece. A pair of Orion Expanse wide field eyepieces came bundled with my short tube refractor and are very well matched to the scope. When you get ready to buy eyepieces you may want to consider them.

Thanks evereyone for the advice. Slightly off subject to thread, but i was wondering in case the SLT goto or drive were to stop working, can we manually move the scope? This is relevent here in India were the replacment of parts or repair is not easily done and also warranty conditions not always respected in toto. If that is the case and i dont go for the SLT and if i would go for a GEM mount with a goto, would that allow me to diconnect the goto and track manually?

The SLIT can not be moved by hand. You have to use the hand controller and motors to move it. Having said that, should the worst case scenario happen and the drive fails and you can not get it repaired, you can remove the alt and az drive motors and then mount will freely move in both az and alt.
