    Default Best webcam for AP?

I'm looking for a webcam that I can shoot the planets with, and maybe brighter nebulae? I don't know if the CCD would be powerful enough for nebulae like m42. What's the best webcam that is still in production and can be used with Windows 7 x64?
    Thanks

I'm interested in this subject too. I have seen the Microsoft Lifecam Cinema and the HP 1080 HD webcam mods.

The HP does 1080 vs the Lifecams 720. I don't know much else (AP uses). There are even nice little machined cases for the Lifecam available from Billet Parts.

The HP seems easy to mod. There is a good YouTube video of the HP HD webcam mod.

I need to use mine with Ubuntu linux and I checked the compatible hardware list and they are both listed as working but would be nice to know for sure if the Lifecam does 100% work with Ubuntu. I'm sure the Lifecam works with Windows 7.

Keep me posted if you find anything interesting. I will do the same.

PS - Does anyone know if you can buy a nose piece of an EP? In the video of the HP webcam mod the stuff the cam into the nose piece of an EP.

You can, indeed, buy eyepiece barrels. I got some 2 inch ones from Surplus Shed. I've not done anything with them as of yet.

But this weekend I modded both a LifeCam Cinema and a LifeCam Studio and stuffed them into the Billetparts adapters. It may yet be a while before I get to try them out nicely.

I've yet to sort out all the attendant software issues, but it appears that if you keep the LifeCam software installed you can't acquire the maximum size image at more than 15fps. It also looks like if you use IC Capture (from The Imaging Source?) that you can arrange to get up to 30 fps using the maximum size image with at least the Cinema version.

BTW, the Studio version of the LifeCam fits very nicely into the Billet Parts adapter designed for the Cinema - but I took a Dremel to it to whack off a part of the inner casing/structure in order to get that nice fit. I've also not yet got a good strain relief system set up for the Studio webcam cables.

I've done the HP 1080 webcam mod and it works well. I use mine with windows 7. It takes a little getting used to how to set the contrast and brightness but works well once you get it. The above youtube video that the previous poster mentioned is very helpful with doing the mod. Just go to youtube and search for "telescope webcam mod" or something along those lines and it should come up. The video is by "Baltier" I believe. It really doesn't require anything other than some jewler's screwdrivers, a safety knife, and a little black paint or electrical tape.
