It sounds like you have the theory correct.
One gotcha is the "meridian flip" if it's a GEM. If you calibrate the RA setting circle on the east side of the sky, you'll have to recalibrate it for the west side (and vice versa).
Ok, so I've done a bunch or research on this mount and so far
calibrate horizontal and vertical axis only with north star
move da/ra axis to another star Vega (for example)
set ra,da with vega
in theory if i'm getting the previous correct i should be good to go.
and about 1/2 the time im in the ballpark according to Stellarium but i am not able to see anything the other im way off, could it be my scope? 6" twinstar or is it me?

Ahh, did not know that. I'll try that next chance I get.
Also each time you get ready to move to a new object reset the RA to the correct setting if you've tracked the object, the DEC should be OK.

Whenever I look for something I always try to set rA/dec with a near star that I know, but still not been able to locate anything with this method yet.
What magnification are you using to start with.? You'll want the lowest you have to get a wide FOV. Setting circles normally will get you at least within finder scope range and if they are decent you lowest mag EP.
Good Luck

I use a 25mm
I have had my own issues with Polar Alignment and then RA alignment on another low DEC star. It seems everyday that I read, research and watch videos that I learn something new that adds a tiny piece to the puzzle. I have discovered many things that were left out of other sources.
My latest list of things to do for PA and RA alignment is waiting to be tested. I am not sure why all these sources aren't closer in similarity. It is very frustrating..I am sure a lot of people are lost to this cause of frustration...the hobby/sport needs to be careful of this. Losing beginners is bad...no beginners = no clubs = no voice = no options.
I will post my version of PA and RA alignment once I understand everything and everything has been tested/confirmed.

Ya I really don't know the quality of the tripod, I have seen the ring nebula and the great cluster in hurcules but that was with no assistance from the eq mt.
