Its not the "Old CGEM".. the CGEM and the CGEM DX are current models. The CGEM DX has 40lb tripod instead of an 18 lb tripod and an upgraded motor control board to offer more current to drive motors. IMHO most of the extra stability if well balanced would come from the tripod. I have heard (don't know how reliable it is) that the DX can overdrive the motors and cause problems with them if too far out of balance.

The DX will say DX on the name plate / control panel and the tripod is easy to spot.

    Hi Andy,

As far as I know, the primary difference between the CGEM and the CGEM DX is the tripod. I have also read that the computerized controller has a higher torque stall limit set for the motors as the CGEM DX is rated for a 25% higher load than the CGEM.

Its the DX tripod that is the significant difference. It is an ingenious masterful design, can be carried easily in its folded position, and opens up with a double bracing system that makes it the most rigid tripod I have ever seen or used. I also have a Losmandy G11 mount and thought its tripod was the best design I had seen until I purchased the CGEM DX and I have to give the advantage to the CGEM DX for rigidity... If you are not in a location to have a permanent pier to mount your scope on, the CGEM DX is probably the next best mount arrangement I have seen...
