Default Need help with Orion XT8i sensor

Hi everyone, a few days ago I lot in my new XT8i. This is my first "real" telescope so I was pretty excited about it. Got it all put together and then sat through several nights of rain and clouds. Last night there was a slight break in the weather, so got to take the scope for the first time. I was impressed by it, even though conditions were still very poor. at one point there was a big enough break in the clouds that I was able to try out the intelliscope functionality, but could not get a good alignment at all and it did not appear to be working correctly. Before I could investigate to much it completely clouded over again and I had to stop for the night.

So this afternoon I tried doing some of the things recommended on this board and other places. Got the azimuth sensor working extremely well, but the Altitude sensor was still not working right, at times I would be moving the scope up and down and then numbers would not change, and eventually they stopped ever getting a reading at all. I was able to troubleshoot it enough that I found that its the sensor disk not moving, and instead just slipping as the scope moves, even though the knob is screwed in tight. I took it off and noticed the disk is extremely tight and hard to turn, even with my hands, but if I do turn it with my hands the Alt numbers actually change, but the scope just does not have enough tension/friction to move it. So does anyone know how I can fix this? Is there anything I can do to loosen it? Is there something else I'm doing wrong?

    Hi,
Con-grates on the scope I just bought the xt10i, and had a hard time getting my azimuth to work. I find I have to tighten the knob pretty tight for the altitude, if it seems like you have to really crank it too much I suggest you give orion a call, they are very responsive. Well actually I used the chat function on there website and they sent replacement parts the next day.

I do notice though that even turn the disk by hand the disk seemed pretty tight.

I agree with what has been said above. The altitude encoder disk is very hard to turn and will only spin with the telescope if the knob is tightened all the way. Since you've done that already, you're best option is to give orion a call and see what they say. Once you get it working, the intelliscope feature works surprisingly well. I definitely have not regretted spending the extra money to get the xt8i instead of the classic 8".

Also if you have trouble by phone try the chat function on their website, worked better than email.

IIRC when I put mine together, the instructions stated not to tighten it firmly. I will have to go take a look at it though.

I checked my scope and the screws are not tightened firmly on the circuit board, just loose enough to allow some free movement. I am able to move the disk by hand but the knob on the telescope (not the one with the white washer) needs to be tightened firmly for the telescope to turn the disk. I luckily never had any problems with the control pad/sensors.
