    Default Odyssey Red Tube 8"

Hello Club members and it great to be a part of this Stellar community! (I'm sure this pun has been used before many times!)
I'm a novice - built a single refractor telescope from PVC and various parts many years ago - worked great when used last - several years ago).
I just happened on an Odyssey 8" without a stand (cost me $25) which rekindled my love of astronomy using telescopes. Everything is there except the stand - just need a base or plans for one. If club members have any ideas - they would be appreciated. You won't hurt my feelings if you tell me to get a new telescope either!
    Thanks John

You could look at some of the designs for Dobsonian telescopes with their bases. I doubt there is anything specifically designed to fit your current OTA.

And I'd seriously consider saving the mirror and otherwise generally re-build the thing.

I actually bought one of those (F/4.5 version) for $20 and I've trashed everything except for the mirror. Now I've got a nice mirror and eventually I plan to build a Dobsonian around the thing. My latest excuse for not having yet done it is that I want to go to RTMC first and learn a lot more about what people are doing and why before I do this one.

I've always wanted to undertake a Dob building project but unfortunately haven't have the time to bring the thought to fruition.

    What's RTMC?
And thanks for the quick response. I saw some of the open/tubeless Dobsonians and they looked great - and fun.

RTMC used to be Riverside Telescope Makers' Conference. Not held in Riverside, CA and now is officially RTMC Astronomy Expo.

It has a lot of exhibits with an awful lot of people bringing scopes and sharing experiments.

I plan to go this year and have even signed up for an astrophotography lecture/workshop although at this stage I suspect most of the info will go right over my head since I've not gotten into AP yet.

I think there are other gatherings of a similar nature which are likely much bigger and more famous - and may be much better. I've never been to any so I can't judge on my own. I think that NEAF is probably the biggest. Stellafane is probably quite big.

But RTMC is within my range and I might even be able to visit some relatives who actually do live in Riverside, CA.

    Default Odyssey 8 Red Scope

    Thanks Ole -
(Do you recall when you asked Swen to check and see if your blinker was working (verking)? - Swen said "Yes", "No", "Yes", "No")

I've got pics of the Odyssey and am contemplating making a base from plywood. I really like the projects and the refashioning of old Dobs - but I'm hesitant to investigate having mirrors only 6" and 8". I remember going to a Star party and being very impressed by the Odysseys and very large Dobs with big mirrors.
I'll have to reacquaint myself with the local enthusiasts - but its snowing today - yet it was near 80 two days ago!

A suggestion? You've got a nice, cheap mirror. It is going to be a lot cheaper to learn about building a Dobsonian around an 8 inch mirror than it is to build one around a 20 inch mirror.

I already have an 8 inch Dobsonian but I still plan to eventually build out my 8 inch Odyssey mirror because doing that will be one of the best ways to learn about what I do and do not like about building Dobsonians.

If I get halfway done with an 8 inch Dob and discover that what I'm trying just won't work (or that I've done it all wrong) the loss of time and material is far less than if I get to the same stage with a 20 inch and figure out that it's all messed up and have to begin again.

So I figure that my 8 inch mirror is the training ground for that 24 inch Dob I'd sometime like to have. A bonus is that the 8 inch mirror is an F/4.5 which means that collimation and other issues will have at least a passing resemblance to those that I'll have with a fast 24 incher.

So yeah, an 8 inch won't be your final desire. But it is an excellent place to start.

And if you want to get your feet wet the really easy way, you might want to go to DobStuff.com. IIRC, they sell what are effectively partial kits. I think I want to start from scratch, but it might be wiser to get the kit. . .

I was just hoping to get the Odyssey functional asap. I previously made an equatorial mount with pipe fittings for my homemade (works good) and may use that for the Odyssey - and just drill a few holes. Then the base will be interchangeable. You're right about the learning curve - I forgot about the adjustments and secondary mirror vibrations on my first (and only) project - needed to buy a spider mount. At the time I didn't have a frame of reference (what to expect from a good telescope or build) and worked with what I had - and enjoyed it too. I've been in the process of cleaning my homemade 6" -and realized I could use the base for both. Will have to buy additional lenses for the Odyssey.
