Personally, I think that I'd go for the zoom. But that's a matter of preference.

If you've not yet messed around with a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope you really need to pay attention to the idea of "focus shift".

Especially when you're using higher magnifications, when you put in another eyepiece you're going to have to re-focus. When you're re-focusing you're going to find that the object you're trying to see can shift entirely out of your field of view - so you're fiddling with both your focus and where your OTA is pointing at the same time. Irritating.

The beauty of the Hyperion Zoom is that it means that from 8-24mm you'll get quite good views which are pretty nicely parfocal. If you've not run into the term parfocal, it roughly means that when you change the eyepiece (either by swapping in another whole eyepiece or by zooming a zoom eyepiece) there is little to no focusing required. So if you use something that is parfocal you don't do nearly as much focusing and you don't get the focus shift and you don't have to fiddle as much trying to find the object again.

Of course, the flip side is that it'd be kind of nice to have the broad range of eyepieces in the set you describe. Mostly I'd be interested for the 32 and the 40mm eyepieces. The Moon filter will be nice - the other filters you'll probably not find useful.

Really, it's a matter of what you want and are willing to put up with.

But me, I'd get the Hyperion Zoom and then look to add something like the 32mm and 40mm eyepieces as I got the chance.

But remember that it's your eyeballs and your budget so get what pleases you, not me.

Well after waiting all day for my new scope, it comes, and...it was the wrong one sent. So now I am waiting til Friday. They sent me a LX200 8" ACF instead of my LX90 12" ACF. They are eating the overnight shipping charges, so that I can get this Friday, paying to send back the wrong one. So any money they made off this deal, they have lost. But one thing about it, they have great customer service! Can't complain at all about that, other than their shipping department people apparently can't read. So, til Friday! I wait.

Should've jacked them up for a zoom eyepiece to compensate you for the inconvenience!

LOL! You know I thought about that. But figured I was going WAY out on a limb with having them giving me overnight shipping so I could get it by the weekend. $200+ for overnight. But you did read my mind on that, and I started to ask. LOL!

Hey Oldcuss...Well I have hit another snag, the tripod and tube they sent me overnight, it came, well the tube did, and in place of a tripod, they sent another 8" tube. So now I am waiting til tomorrow, when my tripod is SUPPOSED to be here! We shall see. Overnight again! I was wanting to ask you about the Meade Astrofinder software that updates the handbox. Is this something that is much used? I am guessing it is. I am thinking of placing a order for it which is why I am asking. So if you can let me know.

Much better to ask Joe LaLumia, jenniferchristine, etc. about that. I've not yet used it.

    Sorry.

Well Olecuss, Finally got my tripod yesterday and was hoping for clear skies, to no avail. But I did get to set up and dial in my spotter scope, mess with various things with it. So far so good and ready to see some stars!!!!
