    Default Open university student cheating

Attention everyone! The user on this forum known as "Kevdpfc" is blatently cheating on an Open University course. The questions he has been posting and getting help with are End of Module Assessment questions. The Open University have rules about this sort of behaviour and this could result in This person being expelled from Open University. The Open University are fully aware of the situation and are not tolerating it. This person is clearly in the wrong as the End of Module Assessment is supposed to be the students own work, if he is getting help via places like this forum then everyone else is helping him get his end goal. I have been asked by the Open University study advisors (Dave Edwards and David King) to out this person. Please, on behalf of the Open University, do not give this user any more assisstance as he should be doing the work himself not using others to do it for him. Thank You.

    Thanx for the info.

Although, if he is being expelled from Open University, he won't likely have more questions for us here. . .

I'd also note that the problem was a rather simple one - so I hope this was not considered a high-level course?

Actually if you read through the responses to the questions he posed to our forum you will see the following:

Kev, do your diagram and work the problem out on paper as far as you can prior to punching numbers into a calculator. It's actually simple at this point - all you need is pretty rudimentary Algebra.

The same is true for any student seeking an easy way to get answers. When we give an answer we cheat the students who are doing the work on their own.

Very true sxinias, but as I said, this is why the Open University want this user Kdpfc named and shamed as it is not fair on people that are trying to do things 'by the book'

As I see it, this is a difficult problem on a site like this.

I'm planning to do a bit more studying on related topics over the next months to years. It is exceedingly unlikely that I would take an actual course for credit (barely possible I might "audit" a course) since I certainly don't need such. But this raises the possibility that I will ask questions of the nature a student would ask - I'd kinda hope I might be able to get some assistance from the folk here.

Also, if someone is doing homework I have long advocated doing that with someone else taking the same course. As long as it isn't merely one copying another's work it is typical for both (or all three or all four) to learn the material more thoroughly. So if someone comes with questions regarding homework (but not tests) I think it is perfectly appropriate to assist/give hints - but generally not to actually do the work for them.

Breaching confidentiality for the sake of the University? Wow! That's a huge ethical and legal issue. I'm pretty sure that I'd be getting very good ID on anyone asking for the real name and very good evidence of perfidy (like a copy of the test) and clear evidence that there was a violation of explicit rules of conduct. I do not envy our moderators and/or admin in judging the matter - lots of things I would not know about that would enter into the issue.

That said, if the university profs/monitors/advisers can't figure out who it was then I think I might be a bit disappointed in their intellect. It seems to me that if the original question was properly understood that unless Kev is much brighter than I suspect - the culprit will be obvious. . .
