Default First Observing and Eyepiece Question

    Hey all,

So the Z8 arrived last Friday and I set it up Saturday afternoon. Quite amazed at the quality of the scope for the price paid. The collimating is so much easier with the laser...I had expected a two hour process, from the horror stories i had been told about.

Anyway, first night out, took in the usual beginner stuff. Orion Nebula, some other constellations....and then of course aimed to the West to see Jupiter which I caught with four of its moons. The I actually watched the Orion nebula for an hour...just continuously amazed and re-adjusting as needed. It was absolutely incredible.

So now my beginner question, which I am sure has been posted many times. I definitely want a little more magnification for this thing. It came with the 1.25 9mm and the 2" 3mm....so are there larger magnification eyepieces available and what is recommended...or do I go with a 2x barlow?

I know I am limited by the size of my scope, I am just not familiar with how big I can take this 8" dob. I'm sure there must be room for some increase in eyepieces?

Again, know these are beginner questions, but I am reading literature to get myself more knowledgeable.

    Thanks all,

    P

OK, I think there may be a little confusion. . . I'm pretty sure you got a 30mm eyepiece rather than a 3mm one.

As I figure it, that means that with your two eyepieces you have the ability to view at magnifications of 40X and 133X.

Since the maximum useful magnification under great viewing conditions is usually around 50 times the diameter of your mirror in inches, you can justify anything that will give you up to 400X. Realistically, though, you're going to live at 200X or lower.

Getting a 2X Barlow or two could really make pretty good sense - but personally I'd probably only bother getting the 2 inch Barlow to use with your 30mm eyepiece.

Even better if you can swing it would be to get a Baader Hyperion Zoom. No Barlow required and if you use that zoom eyepiece you'll probably be able to do at least 90% of what you want/can do without swapping eyepieces or doing much re-focusing. It's a bit pricey, though. . .

I'll have to second what OleCuss says. Since getting my Hyperion zoom over a month ago, I have not even opened my EP case - I have found no need for another EP or the great TV Powermate Barlow that I have.

You are absolutely correct, it is a 30mm. That was a typo.

Sounds like the Hyperion zoom might be the recommended option. I'm going to look into that. My goal right now is to simply get more magnification and make this dob as best as I can make it.

Ironically, i think I am starting to learn the thing that most astronomers learn early on....regardless of the images you get, you always want more out of them and you're hooked.

Thanks for the responses and guidance all.

When you get up in power with a Dob, the FOV zooms across the sky like a satellite.
You may be able to see at 300x, but not for long!! ,lol
I think the Barlow is a good idea - or the zoom lens if you can afford it.

OleCuss is giving good advice on the barlow being a 2" one, since you already have a 2"X1.25" reducer already. In the future you may want to lay out some hard cash on some hi end 2" eyepieces & if you do........... you will be glad you have the 2" barlow then.

The ghost icon is for having an average of 5 posts per day. You pretty much have to haunt the forum to do that.
