I have one of these off of eBay too. It works fine but below ~50 def F and they start to dim. One night it was 18 deg F out and I had it in my tool case outside. Absolutely no output at all. Just an extremely faint red dot if you hold your hand an inch away.

Thinking that it was broken, I checked it the next day when it warmed back up to room temp. Bingo! Worked again. Now it could the batteries too so next time this happens I'm rushing the AAAs inside for a quick voltage read on a meter.

Still a great bargain for warm weather use.

Neil, John (FLboy) on the Cloudy Nights forum has a picture of the Jasper mounted on top of his 8SE just forward of the decal - he loves it, and it looks good. I'm still having a problem supporting them with their ridiculous $15.50 for shipping a small item.

Isn't that laser above illegal at 50mW - I thought the max for consumer use was <5mW.

    Default Test Results

    PM,

Well is was 37 F last night, put in 2 brand new Duracells and left the pointer on the sidewalk for a 1.5 hours. Went back out and pushed the button, would not project a beam 20 feet to a tree branch. The longer I held the button the brighter it got but after 5 minutes it had not gotten bright enough to see the beam when pointed at the sky.

After 3 hours in the house it was back to normal, going back outside it had a nice tight beam that was lighting up the lower clouds.

This one does not like cold...(Dino does a great job on shipping and customer service) but this one works better for pointing when it is warm.

Reference to the power rating... I think they must mean 5 MW because when I got it last spring I shot it's beam on my Living room wall and compared it to the beam from my Laser collomanition tool and they seemed to be of the same brightness and diameter... other than one being red and the other green. After reading that the higher power ones will pop balloons or distort black plastic I tested and did not get results that indicate that type of results.

While it works great for pointing towards stars at night, it would not perform as needed as a finder in cooler weather.

The Always shipping irritates me also, but I want to find a solution. For you it is your neck, for me it is my knees I need to protect.

    Neil

Well Neil, I bit the bullet and went against my principles regarding supporting businesses that charge excessive shipping as Jasper does. I have done endless research - I even spoke with Orion about their unit and they told me they don't guarantee any more than a minimum of 3 mW output on that unit. The clincher was when John (FLboy) on the Cloudy Nights forum posted a picture of his Celestron 8SE this morning, totally covered with frost (including his mounted Jasper GLP) outside in the 27 degree weather and indicating that his good old Jasper Always was still working fine, that I just made the decision and ordered the Jasper.

    PM,

Well I decided to go with the Celestron after talking to them earlier today.

Of course it helped my decision in that Jasper shows on their site to not be shipping the mounts until later part of January!!!

B&H photo will have it in my mailbox by Friday for $74 including shipping!

We can compare notes after we have had a chance to test our individual units.

How is your Sky Align coming along???

    Neil

Neil, I didn't pay close attention when I made the order. I saw that the mounts were on back order but my brain registered December 28th - not January 28th. I just sent them an email attempting to cancel the whole order - unfortunately, I see now that they offer no telephone support. That would be ridiculous to pay through the nose for shipping only to not be able to use the stuff for another 5 weeks. I will be very interested to hear how yours works out. I guess one of the things that scared me was that I believe that was the unit that one guy ordered 5 of them and 2 didn't work.

As far as my SkyAlign, see the thread that I just started on the the Nexstar forum at Cloudy Nights entitled, "It would be impossible to be more frustrated."

Come to think of it, perhaps I will enter it here also.

Neil, I put it in the Nexstar forum here which doesn't seem to be a particularly active forum, but perhaps some help will come. Cloudy Nights is very active so I'm sure I will get some suggestions there.
