I would welcome any suggestions re two things.

    A beginner's astronomy textbook.

Info about any online/distance learning courses in astronomy that you may know about.
    Thanks in advance!

    two books to consider are:
    turn left at orion.
    backyard astronomers guide.
both are very good informative books.
someone else may be able to help with the online/distance courses.

Thanks, Andy, I have heard of those two, and just a few minutes ago ordered a very expensive beginner's astronomy textbook from amazon, but used, it is three dollars, much more reasonable than the original cost.

I have this.. it is a very good first year college text. You did mean textbook and not beginner amateur book?

Backyard Astronomers guide is good, I would pick up a sky chart and get aquainted with the sky using eyes and/or binoculars for starters. Learn the major stars and constellations and way around the sky while reading up. I would also look for a local astronomy club to join and attend a few observing sessions, these are very beneficial so you can get aquainted hands on with various types of telescopes and have a real world view of what you will be able to see.
