Lightbulb Review: Aluminum Hard Cases With Foam Inserts On Sale, Harbor Freight

Disclaimer: I don't work for Harbor Freight in any capacity, I just spend too much money on astronomy and motorcycles so I have to work the bargains when I find them!!

Harbor Freight currently has their 18-inch Aluminum cases with foam inserts on sale.

I picked up two of them and they are GREAT for astronomy bits. (see attached photos).

The foam is deep, all the way to the bottom of the case. This means for most items you will want to SAVE some foam to re-purpose as padding for the bottom of the shapes you make. (see photo for example of a deep object with no repurposed foam (2" extender) and a second (

) that foam was added to bring the eyepiece up and add protection.

I labeled the cases with glow-in-the-dark tape and I am pleased as punch with the outcome. I also installed a tiny $1.00 push light in the top rim so I can see the contents better at night and not jeopardize my night vision.

Lastly, I turned one of the organisers around and use it as a pocket for my focus mask (see photos)

Warning: I had to exchange one of the cases because when I got home I found the inner foam was missing. Check before you leave the store.

Pros: Very inexpensive compared to other cases I have researched, (norm $50 on sale $30), foam is very soft and customizable to any shape.

Cons: Foam is deep, SAVE some foam to re-purpose as padding for the bottom of the cutouts. Watch out for cases with missing foam.

    clear skies!

I heartily agree! I picked one of these up as well upon recommendations here on the forum. Excellent bang for the buck. The foam is indeed deep, and I too saved the removed bits for padding in the bottom of the pockets I created.

Just a great all around case, and for less that $30, you can't beat it! Thanks for posting the review!
