    Default Bad Lens?

How do you tell if you have a bad lens? I have a Sony A7 II and am using a 50mm 1.8. I was just trying to take a shot of Orion, all manual settings and I tried multiple f stops from 1.8 - 3.5, ISO from 400 - 1600, exposure times no greater than 10" - 2", and using live view to focus on a bright star and get it as sharp as possible. All the stars in the picture look like they have wings. I am shooting from a tripod and it was a little windy last night so maybe that is what it is. I'm trying to get some pics uploaded but having trouble. Any tips or suggestions are helpful.

When you say you were shooting from a tripod, do you mean you had your camera mounted on your Atlas EQ?

Nope, just a regular camera tripod. Clouds were not cooperating last night so it wasn't worth it to lug out the Atlas EQ.

    Hello pcardinal,

I can't see any special problem on your capture. It looks the same way as my captures with the 4/3 Panasonic Lumix, and with the Olympus lens 1.8/25, when mounted fix on a tripod.
When you want to pull out more from the night skies with your camera, then mount a 2" CLS or UHC-S filter on front of your camera lens to reduce the light pollution, use a tracking mount, and stack the exposed frames after.

It's a rabbit hole, both on money and time, when you start with the AP.

    Best,

    JG

I had a night of no wind, weighed down the center of my tripod, and used the app on my phone to take the pictures. 28 lights and darks, F1.8, 10", ISO 400, and stacked in sequator. The raws were much more stable. I appreciate all the advice.

These are the Stacked final Images?? What do the Individual Frames look like?? It honestly looks like Sequator failed to Align on the Stars, if these are Stacked Final Images.

You should attempt to perform stacking with DeepSkyStacker v4.1.1 - the current "freeware standard". This program is specifically designed to Stack Star and DSO Images, and is much more familiar to most of us - should you need additional support.

I'll try and get some individual frames up and I'll try to use DSS again. I don't prefer that over sequator. Seems like it takes forever and didn't perform as well but I'm probably just not using it correctly.
