    Default First Guided AP Image

    HI All,

The weather has been so poor. I know that I am not alone here!

Well, I finally got a good night to try out my new guider. It is an Orion StarShootI Autoguider with Orion 50mm guidescope. I had it out a few times to test connections, operation, and learn what to do. I still have a long way to go with all except the connections. I have that down.

I tried previously to image with my AVX mount unguided and had many issues. Lots of trash images and generally very unruly. Well, the guider made an honest mount of the AVX. Well, more so anyway. The improvement is really phenomenal. Not the most perfectly round stars (yet), but pretty good. Also, no trash images. All images are keepers. I can now image at up to 300 seconds if I ever try a dark location. From my Bortle 7 backyard, I am limited to 120-180 seconds at iso 800.

The link below is to my first image. Not a masterpiece by any means, but it makes me happy.

Followed Hondos Startools workflow to a tea! Thanks Hondo!

    Lights: 60 x 120 sec at iso 800
    Darks: 20 x 120 sec at iso 800
    Bias: 30 x 1/4000 sec at iso 800

Thanks for looking! Also, thanks for all of the helpful advice!

    Hi Henk and Brian,

Thanks a lot for the very kind comments!

This was really a quick process in Startools. I started by binning at 50 percent just to move things along to see if I could resolve any details. Turned out nice and I was even able to extract some color and brightness which was a bonus.
I definitely learned that a target with adequate exposure time makes it a lot easier to process for sure!
So glad that I got out Sunday night. We have had such poor weather for so long, I had to try to get my first guided image. I started setting up at 1:30!

The nice weather lasted one day and night. Rained all night and is supposed to rain for the next week. I am okay with that because I just started a bathroom remodel and it’s my first, so I am going slowly and carefully.

Thanks again and looking for to my next target!

    Jim

I guess that for good measure, I ought to add what the target is!

    Bodes Nebula, M81 and M82.

Very nice, Jim! Autoguiding opens up a whole new world for AP doesn't it.

I also started using Hondos Startools work flow some time ago and it truly made a huge difference in my processing skills. Here is another big thank you Hondo.
