Default ZWO 294MC Pro start up accessories?

    Hey all,

I think I finally am making a go for the ZWO 294MC Pro for DSO AP. I have a few questions about it and what to anticipate the initial accessories needed to get started. Since I am dishing out 1k my budget will be tight. SO whith this in mind and my set up being a Sky Watcher Equinox 80mm 500mm FL at F/6.25, I heard it was the same as the Orion Eon 80mm. I got it second hand for a good deal I think. It will be on my new AVX.

Now to power the Cooler I read I need a 12v adapter. I prefer it was a plug since I will be putting it on the same 12volt 33AH battery that powers my laptop with a DC AC Inverter. The other 12 V battery 33AH is connected to the AVX via cigarette adapter to clamps. (The clamps are big so I don;t know how I would put more claps from another DC connecting to it).

Do I need an IR Cut filter, and extender tubes to reach focus?

Do I need a 2" Baader M & S GLow (since I have a decent amount of light pollution), or can I use my already bought 1.25" Baader M &S one and use the 1.25" nose piece adapter with the 294mc. Now if I do that, does making the connection 1.25" have any effect from a direct 2" connection on quality?

And last what else would I need to get started that anyone could think of? I think I plan on selling my current ZWO 385MC to help fund the 294mc Pro, then pick up another one as I get more money in during planet season. Also How would the ZWO 294MC handle planets compared to my ZWO 385MC? Could I get a way with it or would the 385mc or 224mc work much better (I will be using my 10" AD10 Aperatura for planets) I do like the wider field of View over the 385mc since it is a push job. It will then also be used as a guide camera.

    Thanks All,

-Yes, you need IRC filter (for any optical system with lenses). Also you need FF (or combo FR/FF). I don't know what extender tubes you need (anyway, there is a precise distance beetween FF and camera).
    -Against LP I recommend IDAS LPS-D1; Baader M& S Glow is not very effective for this task;
-1.25" nosepiece adapter could induce vignetting.
-For planets and Moon, 385MC is better (higher fps due to the lower resolution; better image scale due to the smaller pixels)

Agree with what has been offered, but by 1.25 nosepiece, do you mean the integral 1.25 thread or something else? My ZWO 1600MC is just fine with the internal 1.25 thread for filters. I don't know if the Sky watcher 80 you mention is reasonably 'APO' like or if you would need a blue/violet killer similar to the Baader fringe killer that I use with semi-APO lenses. My cooler runs just fine in winter with a 12v wall wart, 1 amp variety, but in summer, I power it with a Black and Decker power tank as it is likely to draw 2 or more amps.

I know that the form factor of theses two cameras is virtually the same even though the cmos chip is completely different.
    Good luck,
    Steve

The zwo asi 294 comes with all the spacers to make a threaded connection to the telescope with 55mm backfocus if using a flattener. I use a baader 1.25 ir cut filter with the t2 - 1.25 filter adapter and see no vignetting. The t2 - 1.25 filter adapter also is included with the camera

Also Steve, What do you mean by the internal 1.25" thread, does that have something to do with the T2-1.25" adapter that threads on or something different? Also as far as I know for the Equinox 80mm is Click for link of description

I got it for around $400 and it is in like new condition. Also a doublet not triplet. But I figure I got to start somewhere

That's it, the T2-1.25", doesn't vignette the chip at all since the filter is right on top the chip window. The scope seems similar to my AT80LE APO doublet, but the spec sheet doesn't state an FPL-53 or equivalent glass. Given that, maybe the Baader Fringe Killer filter will be needed, but try it first. In any case, use a UV/IR cut luminance filter. Seems like a great price for the scope.

    Clear skies,
    Steve

P.S. I have had really good luck with Ha and Oiii narrow band filters too, give them a try.

Default Re: ZWO 294MC Pro start up accessories?

Well I purchased the ZWO 294MC Pro today and bought the ZWO AC adapter with it for the cooler, I figure if anything went wrong they can't blame I didn't use the right AC adapter. Now about the IR Cut filter, I did not purchase that as I am nearly drained on funds but my question is, How does a GSO or ZWO IR Cut Filter compare to the Baader IR Cut Filter? I can handle that.... and I know once I get the hang of AP in DSO I will go for the Baader but just to start out would the GSO one or ZWO IR Cut do justice for the time being with decent results? I would rather put more money towards the Field Flatner.

Also just currious, would my Baader "M & S Glow with IR Cut" be a good substitute other then getting a cheap dedicated Cut Filter until I get Nice one, I know it was mentioned above it did not perform well.

Also for a field flattner, Can anyone recommend one for my Telescope. Do I need a Focal Reducer + Field Flatner? The Skywatcher Equinox 80mm 500mm F6.25? Here is a Review I found of it with some more details As far as the optics, I know it has Schott glass and O'Hara ED Glass as the Seller said from Astromart.

I would save for a field flatner as all fracts really need one, unless they are the 4 element type. Wait on anymore filter until some images are done. Just a caution on IR cut filters, I got a cheap one and it did cut IR but also cut Ha, just a piece of DSLR filter. So check your first nebula pics and see if Ha is coming thru. A better bet is a standard lum filter like the ones for mono cameras these can be had for a reasonable price.

    Good luck,
    Steve

Thanks Steve, I will do the field flattener first and check the first images for Ha. Now as far as the field flatteners I am completely lost on which one to get for the scope and if I need it to be with a Focal reducer since the scope is at F6.25. Do I need a certain kind of flattener for my scope are they universal according to aperture size & focal length (For example is there a universal one for 80mm ED refractors? or does it have to be made to fit specific brands and such?) I would say I am looking to spend around $100-$150 range or secondhand one for cheaper to get started. Sorry for so many questions

    Thanks again,

I have the AT flattener, non-reducer type, since I have the AT80LE and it works on my Orion semi-APO too, but I have no recommendations one way or the other. Maybe someone else could chime in. Most out there say they are universal for generic f6-ish scopes.

    Sorry can't help more,
