Default ASCOM Driver for Nikon DSLR

    Hi Everyone,

Just curious if anyone has tried using the new ascom for dslr camera drivers.
I am specially interested in Nikon.

    https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/6...rs-canon-nikon

    https://stargazerslounge.com/topic/3...s-canon-nikon/

    https://forums.sharpcap.co.uk/viewto...=1006&start=20

I am a new user of SharpCap. Mainly, I downloaded it to try out the PA feature, but did not realize that I needed the Pro version, which I purchased.
It connects fine to my SSAG on the bench, but I have yet to have a clear sky to test it.
I know that there are many methods of polar aligning out there and I like the PHD drift align tool, but it’s time consuming. I’m only after a ‘close’ PA since I plan to use PHD unilateral DEC guiding since I have a ton of mount DEC backlash, and PHD doesn’t display how close PA is until it is done.
I am newly into guiding ( January of this year) and haven’t had much clear sky time to test things out. PHD works well with my SSAG, but only testing and snapping test images. I have not actually imaged any target yet.
I use DigicamControl to run my DSLR. It is a Nikon D3300 and is not supported by Backyard Nikon or APT. Actually, minus some features, DigicamControl does what I need it to do.
Recently, while playing with SharpCap inside the house, I saw that is a quite interesting and powerful piece of software. I bumped into some discussion about development of an ascom driver for Canon and Nikon dslr’s.
I downloaded the driver last night and while I see it in SharpCap under ascom dslr, I cannot connect to my camera with it. I only see a Canon connection listed.
In the discussions (see links above), the developer, vtorkalo, states that it will work with a Nikon dslr.
Does anyone here have any experience with this driver? Especially with a Nikon dslr?
I know it is new and I am sure is still under development, but it sure sounds interesting to me to be able to use SharpCap to control my imaging camera.
Thanks for reading my post and your time.

    Clear skies to everyone!

    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi Jim,

I didn't even know they were making ASCOM controllers for DSLRs. All of my cameras work with both APT and BYE so my ignorance is at least founded in reality.

I will start investigating to see if there is an advantage for me to start using these drivers.

    Cheers and thanks,
    JT

    Hi JT,

You might not have heard about it too much because it’s so new and it might be a lone developer working on it.
The only way that I looked into it was I kind of put the cart in front of the horse. I bought SharpCap for PA, then looked into using my dslr with it. Unfortunately, my dslr will only work with DigicamControl which does a pretty good job with basic capture functions and focusing.
Looks like the some people have reported that the ascom driver for dslr does work with their Canon, not so much about Nikons. I am sure it will only be a matter of time before they are worked out. Thankfully, there are a few very sharp folks out there who like to help people out.
The developer posted this on the Cloudy Nights forum. I hope that the link works.

    Thanks,

Unfortunately, you own the D3300 - one of the D3000-series DSLRs which Nikon failed to produce an SDK with Tethered Exposure Control. That means it is not supportable by either of the main DSLR AP Imaging Apps - Astro Photography Tool (APT) or BackyardNikon (BYN) or Sequence Generator Pro (SGP).
As the ASCOM Drivers are essentially Shells for the Camera's SDK, that precludes support for the D3xxx via that mode too (unless the ASCOM Driver Developer decides to take the limited DigicamControl Interface instead).

    Hi Siegel,

Yes, I know that my camera is not supported by the software you mentioned because of the lack of tethered exposure control. That is unfortunate and limiting. DigicamControl works pretty well (my only choice), but is limited.

The developer actually does state support for the D3000 series Nikon cameras though.

I haven’t had any luck so far and some of that is probably because I am not implementing it correctly.

    Thanks for your response!
