    Default Recommended Guidance Questions

A couple of months ago I decided to begin my journey into astrophotography. I used the equipment I had, and focused on learning some basics about capturing and processing. So far I've been working with a CG-4 mount w/drive, an Omni XLT 150 and my Canon T3i.

I've been informed that my wife has purchased an AVX mount for me as a Christmas gift and I took advantage of Explore Scientific's sale on the ES 80ED f/6 essential telescope. I'm now in the planning stage of completing this system so I can begin imaging in January using the Canon T3i. I currently have no components for guiding, and would like recommendations about the best items to purchase, that are the best value for $ spent. I don't have tons of spare cash for this. I assume that guiding will still be important, even with the short focal length refractor. I've heard some say the ZWO ASI 120mm Mini would be a good guide camera choice, and then others say "NO" get the ZWO ASI 290mm Mini. Then, others say OAG is the way to go. So, should I go with a camera/guide scope system or OAG? Once that recommendation is made, which camera & guide scope or camera and OAG? I plan to use BackyardEOS for camera management and probable PHD for guiding (I'm open to better options).

One additional piece of the system still up for decision is polar alignment. Presently, I have a polar scope for this mount. I'm aware that QHY offers Pole Master, and I understand that I could polar align with Sharpcap if I had a guide scope & camera. So, what are your recommendations? Thanks for your suggestions and help.

You need 4 things and all of them can be either second hand or gently used.

    1. A guide scope. This can be any cheap off Craigslist short FL refractor 50-70mm that can take 1.25" EP Somewhere in the $25-$60 range
    2. A guide camera. OPT has a used ZWO ASI 120MC right now for $105.
    3. A way to affix both scopes to the AVX mount, I use a side-by-side (SbS) setup to reduce in any chance of flexure. Around $40
    4. A laptop computer to run everything. Hopefully, you already have one of these.

So you could be up and running with as little as a $200 expenditure.

Here is an image of my ES 80mm APO and my "El Cheapo" guide scope.

Sorry for the image size that's all the forum can do right now.
    Cheers,

I forgot to mention that I had a laptop to run it all. I really like the looks of your setup. Where did you purchase the side by side hardware that the telescopes are both mounted on?

Here is the bar that is clamped into the AVX saddle.

And then I bought two of these from Amazon and they get bolted to that saddle crossbar.

They're not specifically designed to work together, but they work together really well.

Don't feel that you need to get into guiding right away. With a good polar scope alignment and a short focal length refractor, You should be able to get 2 minute exposures without trails.
