    Default camera ideas

    alright ladies and gentleman,

I'm looking for camera ideas I love looking at nebulas, doublecluster, open cluster, I'm wanting to know since I'm starting out in this astrophotography world because the asi 120mm doesn't seem to work on sharp cap since it operates on 2.0 usb so suggestions welcome and clear skies.

The ASI 224 operates on 3.0 USB, perhaps that will work for you.

I believe SharpCap thinks they are compatible with all ZWO cameras. It should be able to handle USB2 data just fine?

However, changing to another camera might be a good idea. With what OTA would you be using this camera? Is your emphasis on maximum resolution or is a wide FOV the priority? What kind of budget do you have?

I own a ZWO ASI120MM, works fine with SharpCap 2.9 and 3.1. However, you need to make sure your plugged into a USB 2 port on your 'puter. Am assuming your Orion ST 120 is a f/5 scope. I have the SkyWatcher version of that scope. Sadly my focuser is poor (excessive slump) when a camera is attached. Also, the CA is bad, in mine anyway.

You didn't mention what mount your using. For practically any AP, the mount is where issues start, and it does down hill from there! I have attempted AP with a multitude of combinations. All worked to varying degrees. With what I own for gear it is highly improbable that I would ever catch an award winning photograph. I'm Ok with that....

By the time the AP bug had completely infected me I had tried capturing with a DSLR on both long and short focal length scopes.... results were better when I could leave the Focal reducer out of the imaging chain. In other words what worked better for me was the old phrase "Less is more". My ZWO ASI120MM is great for capturing bright(er) objects. I've tried DSO stuff with different scopes and it just doesn't seem to have the capacity to put together much of an image.

My current set-up works for what I'm interested in doing at this moment in time. None of my astro stuff was purchased new. I have a Atik Infinity stuffed into a 8" SkyWatcher Quattro, all sitting on a CGEM mount. The only add-ons I put in the imaging train is a IR cut filter. I have also used the Atik camera in a C8 SCT. My capture program is also from Atik, it is called Infinity.

This program will stack your images on-the-fly, still leaving the user to flirt with Exposure, saturation and a whole bunch more stuff. Post processing can be done to improve your image. Award winning set-up, nope. BUT, I have something to show for the evening. Oh, I should mention, it won't take hours to put together a image you can recognize, especially if you compare your image to what you'd see in a close up in Stellarium.

With the amount of cameras now available on the market, the decision can be difficult. The end result (image) that satisfies you is the only thing that counts. Most of all have fun, most of us don't take images for a living!

yea I plug in the zwo in a 3.0 port which might be the problem but I didn't think it would honestly matter. My mount is a AVX I'm also having issues with polar alignment

Lots of stuff in your posts ... but let me focus on the last comment.

I use an AVX myself. Mine has performed quite well. The ASPA function on the AVX works really well. I personally think it's the best feature of the whole mount. In other words, I think you should be able to get very good PA just using the ASPA function.

I did a test today I made sure all the drivers were updated on my ZWO asi120mm and I opened up sharpcap and I covered the camera lens and it went black and I uncovered and it went white so I'm assuming that helping in what ever I was doing but futher test are required.
