Default Canon Powershot A570is direct fit on focuser

Interesting Salvation Army find, for the astrophotographer on a budget like myself. I picked up this Canon Powershot A570is from my local store for $3. Was working perfect. So I press this little button next to the lens and the ring on the front comes off, to add Canon camera specific attachments like wide angle lens and stuff, what it is, is a lens on a cone that fits on top of the camera zoom lens and does not interfere with the zoom function. So I'm like, lemme try my Canon DSLR T-mount on this, even though it is not designed for that, since the pattern on the t-mont is to slide and lock into a Canon dslr ef mount. But anyway, so the t-mount inside ring sits flush fit on this camera when you take the ring off that camera. Tight fit. The camera lens works just fine inside this ebay t-mount extension tube. You can probably put a small eyepiece in there too, my 25/32/40 are too long and hit the zoom lens when it travels inside the tube, a zhumell 9mm that came with the z10 works fine. Also, you can attach it directly to the focuser, or on a 2x barlow with threads on top, or on a zhumell/celestron 8-24mm zoon lens. This allows me to take pictures and videos without having to put the camera on a a-focal contraption, which I do have and end up fiddling with it half the time for things to line up properly. So, there it is, I see these old Canon powershots in salvation army all the time, a very capable point and shoot camera that fits on the scope direct as a dslr would.

That's pretty cool, might work well for planetary. Can you control the exposure duration?

I have a Powershot A620 that looks like your A570 and has the same ring design. Do you think this adapter would fit? It says it fits the Canon EOS. Would that be the same as your DSLR? I think it would be fun to play with.

    Thanks,

I have an old Canon EOS 350D that I bought the T-ring for, to attach it directly to the scope. That same T-ring adapter fits right on top of these Powershot series cameras with that outside accessory attachment ring, albeit not locking in place, just a tight fit around the ring on the camera. It is deep and tight enough for the camera to not just fall off. So now I get to take videos and pictures and delayed exposures upto 15 seconds for $3! I couldn't believe how capable this little camera was, an excellent device. My A570is zoom travels just as far as your A620, and they take the same wide angle lens accessories. I think it should work just fine with the t-ring and I would get a T2 M42*0.75 Thread Extension Ring Tube 5-20mm Kit. It's a set of spacers for the t-ring tube, so if you need to shorten or increase the length of your setup. I only use the tube that came with the T-ring if I have to use an eyepiece in it, otherwise I just use two different size spacers from this kit right on top of a Zhumell/Celestron 8-22mm zoom eyepiece that has threads on the top.

New Salvation Army score. $2.99 Kodak Easyshare z740 in pristine condition. Has a 45.5 to 55mm cone on top which can stepped down with a 55-42mm ring adapter and made into a good astrophoto camera. Takes excellent video, also viewfinder has a little screen of itself inside it that looks through the lens, flamin' awesome.

Thanks for the helpful response. The A620 is a great little camera. We've had it for over 10 years and it does everything we need, from zoom to macro. Here is a photo of the moon I took just holding it up to the eyepiece.

I don't plan on doing any serious astrophotography; just fooling around.

    Thanks again,

All these ideas are well worth exploring. I have the original Powershot Pro 1 which is a very high quality, full featured P&S with an SLR level of flexibility that I still use in the same manner as described above to get very good results. It is a 14 year old design, so much better performance can be found from more recent models. The concept is excellent, and if you move up the line to higher priced cameras the image quality of these small sensor cameras is quite impressive. This segment of the market is so competitive and sees frequent new model introductions, so even a 3 or 4 year old example will be comparatively cheap used, and offer improvements in low light sensitivity and more effective noise reduction.

Yeah, I guess the key here is to keep it low cost. Plenty of near never used point and shoot cameras littering Salvation Armies, Good Will and mom's and pop's resale shops. People buy burn phones, I buy burn cameras, some of these things cost hundreds just a couple of years ago, now to be had for less than a fiver, but as good as it was day one. Also, I don't want a dslr that I have to baby because it cost more than my house.
