Default What ISO with Canon, Nikon, Sony DSLR?

Ever wonder what ISO you should be using to get the best performance out of your Canon DSLR? This gentleman has done the work and has included nice charts for many models of Canon DSLR's. He also has links for Nikon and Sony.

I thought y'all might find this useful.

For me using a Canon 5Dmkiii and T5i DSLR ISO 800 has been the perfect setting after lots of experimenting.

Thanks for the info JJ. It's nice to get validation of what I have been doing since figuring out ISO was really a "thing". And an interesting site to explore in more detail.

Well it confirmed for me what I had also found through trial and error that around 800 was best suited for my camera.

Although I found when it was colder out I can get away with 1,200 or 1,600.

There are some variables not taken into account such as temperature or ambient light pollution. But it is an excellent baseline starting point.

    Thanks for the link.

Hi Josh40996 I to use same Nikon 3200 at 1600 iso. just curious though I have been doing astrophotography for about 3 months with very pleasing results, however I do not use flats as the Nikon has no av setting to meter for flats. what setup do you use on Nikon .

Mick, not to hijack the thread but it is easy.

All you have to do is fuss around with shutter speeds until your frames for flats has the histogram in the left 1/3.

Welcome to the forums. You will find many other threads discussing taking flats with the Nikon around. It is a common question.

I'm not so convinced since stacking is not included in the discussion, in the previous discussion link that he refers to. He argues for instance that increasing the ISO will reduce the dynamic range. For a single picture that is true but if you stack the images you can compensate for that by taking more subs of reduced exposure time in order to not reach the well depth - the stacker will make up for it because it works in floating point and has no well depth.

Thanks for posting that link. I'm going to be doing some testing when it clears up around here. I've been running my ISO higher than it recommends there so it should be interesting to look at the difference.
