Lightbulb Seeking sample night sky images to "stack" as I develop an app to help preview stacks

    Hello,
I'm starting the process of making a night sky photo camera (very amateur night sky photo camera, but homemade and cool!). At this stage, I'm working on a starter backend app to assist with taking and managing photos. I thought it would great to pre-stack photos on the "camera" itself (which is basically a mini-computer) for preview/progress purposes.

With that, would anyone be willing to let me borrow a sequence of sky photos that would make use of the stacking method to combine them? It doesn't have to be a fantastic composition or anything, just something to play with. I'm researching imaging methods to make this happen and would love to try it out in different ways. I'll be happy to share the results here and give credit where due, not redistributing outside the forums without explicit permission of course (e.g. posting a tweet about how cool it is and linking to here).

Thanks for taking a look in advance!

    Hi,

Sounds like you have an interesting summer project. If this is a personal or school project then there is no problem with you seeking assistance from the membership. Be aware that all commercial activity is prohibited. However, once you post anything on the Astronomy Forum it is in the public domain.

I don't know what camera sensor you are using but you may take a look at some CCTV cameras. Many of these cameras, even some $60 cameras, are integrating camera and internally stack 1024 images or more.

One problem with your request for images to stack is the size of the file that contains images for stacking. If help is not forthcoming, an alternative is get a tripod and bridge camera and take a series of photographs of the Milky Way using a high ISO setting and about a 1 second exposure. Make 100 or so exposures adjusting your camera every 10 shots so that it keeps the same general area of the night sky in the field of view. Also, try to keep the camera's altitude angle under around 50 degrees and shoot the MilkyWay while it is in the eastern sky. One problem with this approach is that you can not do a pixel for pixel stack without first orientating each image to adjust for the earth's rotation.

    Good luck on your project.

    Hello sxinias,
    Thanks for your feedback.

This is definitely a personal project and I love to share (more of a personal training project more than anything, heavy on Bluetooth communications). I'll be sure to post results and even the Python code to make it happen as I'm referencing/tweaking code found on other sites and such.

Sadly, my functional digital camera is busted. I wore it out... I could probably rig up this new one to take pictures, but all the parts are still loose with some parts still to be ordered (like a battery which is useful). I'll be sure to give it a shot in about a month if no samples are available.

Thanks again for the support! I'm super excited about this project.

I've started putting up all my raw data on google drive. What's there so far is here:

M8 is an interesting one. All are shot with my mono CCD.

You could try Raw Astrophotography Data, although I'm sure there others too, however the processing requirements will be large especially for a very simple camera based cpu/gpu. Also for a semi simalar processing model check out Deepskystacker Live, my understanding that whilst it's pc based it does stack images on the fly. Good luck
    Thanks George

    excelsior84, Ganders2,
Thanks a ton for these great resources!

    excelsior84,
I downloaded the M8 zip and will play with it this evening.

    Ganders2,
Also great stuff!! I will check these out as well.

These are all great to test from and I could probably test multiple to see how things are working (or most likely in my case, not working).

This also reminds me that I have a LOT to learn in regards to astrophotography. I usually learn by making these off-the-wall projects though so all the more fun.

"Stacking" vs. "Stacking". It seems like I'm seeing two types of stacking going on in astrophotography. One where a moving view of a feature such as a nebula needs to be aligned per frame (as you provided: THANK YOU!!!), and another where the scenery is the focus and you see star trails in the resulting image. I'd love to try both, but know that the first type of stacking will keep me busy for quite some time!

Thanks again! More updates as I have something very pretty or notably ugly to look at.
