    Default M106 with a CEM60 @ 3 degrees. (-16c)

Put on my brave face and went out tonight to function test the CEM60 in cold weather. The mount performed like a champ and by the time I was through, it was 3 degrees and still falling, luckily no wind.

Managed to grab some time on M106 while I was checking stuff out.

Having some problems with my background sky this evening, but I'll sort that out at a later date. This is 2hrs with the AT6RC w/AT2FF, @ F.9 unguided unfortunately, since auto-guiding is disabled in the mount during the test phase. The next firmware update will turn it on...yay. 120 second exposures at ISO 1600.

Had to laugh out loud when I was tearing it down at the end of the evening, I disconnected a 3 foot length of cable and it was so cold I could hold it out like a branch and it didn't move...lol.

On a positive note, the mount performed excellently at temps well below the rated specs of 20 degrees..

    Now to thaw out.

    Thanks for looking,

    Paul

One would hope that a Quality Mount would perform well in Temps somewhat below 20C... One would hope for -20C !!

A Mount Manufacturer really needs to be cognizant of where his target audience is likely to operate such equipment - and it's neither in a Lab or a Heated Factory Floor.
Instead, they are by definition use Outdoors; Year-Around; At Night; often in High-Altitude Settings. All of these environmental elements add up to a substantial range of Operating Temps - mostly at the lower end of the scale.

We've become familiar with the tendency for Hand Controllers to become sluggish - especially their little LCDs - at Colder Temps and have learned to either heat them or circumvent them. One would HOPE that one doesn't need to do the same to an entire Mount...

Exactly. That's why I wanted to test the mount's functioning and encoder motor operation at low temps, just to make sure it wasn't a 'fair weather mount'...

I also learned that when you take a AT6RC from a 70 degree environment to a 10 degree environment, it takes about one hour of cooling before you can even start to get a sharp focus and begin imaging...

    Best...Paul

It's good to hear that it's not looking like a Fair Weather Mount...

However, what frustrates me is that either: 1) iOptron failed to Test at "Realistic Winter Temps"; or 2) iOptron did Test but found something for which the Bean Counters and Lawyers decided the rather Conservative rating would address. And ultimately, if a problem does crop up for a user who, like most of us, operates the CEM60 below that 20C, it will dependent upon the largesse of iOptron's Customer Service Group whether that issue is fixed or the user is left on-the-hook.
Let's hope that as iOptron brings the CEM60 fully to market, they decide to reset the Operating Temps range to much more realistic values.
