Default Deep Sky Stacker will not handle my raw files.

My very first post here, so here it goes.
    I have a 6" Newtonian and a new Canon Rebel T3i.
I have dabbled with astrophography since I bout the scope in 1976, but it was so tedious with film, I sort of gave up for a long time.

Now that I have the T3i, my interest is renewed.

Here is where I am at this time.
I downloaded the latest DSS from their site, and it would only show the left quarter or third of the picture, and of course nothing would work from that point on.
Hours and Hours later, I finally googled some article that said I had to get the beta. So now I have Version 3.3.3 Beta 51. YEA! It opened the pictures now.

But wait! No matter what I have tried, and no matter whose post I used, it would only end up with stacking 1 photo.
So my assumption at this point was that my pictures are just bad somehow. Off I went trying to find some info about what the files needed to be.

I found a site where I could download some sample photos to use to practice DSS. It turned out they were only available in TIF format, but I said, who cares, I am just trying to learn.
These files worked just fine. TADA!

Then I wondered if my files would work as tiff's. I converted all of them, and it worked fine!

Why won't DSS handle my raw files???
Is there another version hiding out there somewhere that will handle the raw files?

    Thanks for any suggestions/tips.

Your files are in CR2 format, right? It's possible that your de-bayering settings for raw files are messed up.

    Yes, they are CR2.
What is de-bayering, and where do I work the settings?

De-bayering is the process of turning the data from the individual cells on your camera (which are arrayed in what is called the Bayer matrix) into full color pixels. This is required process for a "one-shot-color" camera. I haven't actually messed with the de-bayering settings in DSS, but they have pretty extensive and easy to use documentation online if you google it.

Your problem is that you do not have the latest version of DSS.

The problem is the DSS website is not up to date, what you get from the download on the DSS website is not the current version although you would think it was.

What you have to do is go to the DSS yahoo users group, and on DSS Yahoo group home webpage, is instructions on how to get the latest version. Is listed as a beta version I'm not sure which level it's up to but if you get any beta version ending in.47 or higher, it will work with the Canon CR 2 files.

Canon threw a monkey wrench in the works by changing the.CR 2 file format when they upgraded to either the Digic3 or Digic4 camera processor... It's been this way for a couple years now that I know of, and why the DSS website has not been updated is somewhat of a mystery.
    Thanks, Mitch - K1FH

    Thanks for the de-Bayering explanation.

I went to the Yahoo group and found the newest version is now 3.3.4. So i downloaded it, and it still comes up with the 'Only 1 picture will be stacked' message.
I'll do more reading in the Yahoo group messages to see what they have to say.
    Thanks, all.

I'm guessing that the problem is not with your RAW files but with the brightness of them. I shoot RAW and JPG so I have something out of the scope during my viewing session to show what I can get from the RAW once processed. The jpgs I use are very bright (using ISO6400) but the RAWs often fail to process in DSS because the image is too dark and no matter what the settings, I can not find enough stars for DSS to be happy and process more than one image.
Go into "Settings". Then "RAW/FITS DPP settings..."
On the RAW files tab, change "Brightness" under "Colours Adjustment" to '5' or '10'. This multiplies the brightness and stars that DSS can't see suddenly become visible to it. This will probably affect the appearance of your output so remember to drop it back to '1' for other file processing or the images will be far too bright.

    Hope that helps
