That must be some consideration for 32-bit Rational data format, because TIFF is a Lossless format capable of either 16-bit or 32-bit Integer data (and actually a 32-bit Rational format that litle but PixInsight can read).

No, there shouldn't be any Data Loss when using TIFF - especially as a transitional format from RAW (which is 12-bit, 14-bit or 16-bit data).

While I don't normally deal in FITS, when I do I usually use ESO's FitsLiberator v3, or sometimes Fitswork v4.

Of curiosity, what do you have which outputs in FITS ?? (That doesn't also output in TIFF - a roughly equivalent format in Imaging terms...)
Brilliant - thanks Seigell. I'm sure I checked before but I've just installed the latest version of IrfanView+plugins and FITS does work up to a point - as you say, there are so many flavours of fit files... seems vanilla 16-bit is OK, but not floating point (still checking this out though). It would be great to have a fits thumbnail viewer...

If you open a raw or fits file in Pi then save it as tiff there is absolutely no IMAGE data loss. However, Pi warns you that raw/fits keywords will not be saved (because tiff has no such concept).
Since Pi makes a lot of use of fits keywords it is best to avoid tiff if possible. I never use it these days... my raw files are CR2, everything I do in Pi is fits and if needed to print/post I save to jpeg in Pi.

So should the IrfanView with link of plug ins you provided that I downloaded work with .fit files? Do I need to change a setting or if the .fit file is 16-bit it just work?

Okay, so in short, I should not use a custom white balance or if I do it won't make any difference in PP? I use Nebulosity at the moment, and will have to see if there's an option to ignore white balance when processing RAW files. It did seem to be much easier to get the colors balanced when using creating and using a custom white balance with my 60d. However, last time I tried to photograph with the LP filter and just the standard daytime WB, I hadn't yet perfected my flats.

So for those with LP filters, does everyone just rely on the PP tool to color balance?
