This is a photo shot with full spectrum T4i with the Astronomik UV/IR blocking filter and the white balance used is daylight and it was 180 seconds @ ISO800. The light pollution at my house isn't that bad, in fact if I was to drive 50 miles in any direction the LP would get worse. My guiding is excellent but I think I had the guiding off for this shot because I was testing my tracking. I don't want to change the white balance of my raw files ever, I get the integrated image color calibrated in PixInsight when I'm at that step, thats no problem but what I would like is to be able to review the raw photos with a custom white balance being used by a program but once I take them into PI for stacking I want them to be with no WB being used. You're wrong about that Yahoo group, the guy was talking about taking photos for the blue green channel and then turning the focus knob a little bit and taking photos for the red channel.

Heres a screen shot of my guiding that night right before I turned it off for a couple shots.

When you open a RAW file in PixInsight, the white balance is completely ignored. Always. There is nothing you can do to the camera or the RAW file to change that. The ONLY way to make Pi even look at the in-camera white balance is to force it by changing some settings in format explorer (DO NOT DO THIS).

If you set a custom white balance in-camera, other packages however can be set by you to apply or not apply that white balance. None of this will affect PixInsight in any way.

If you are shooting under coloured skies (usually orange) then take an image and use that to set the custom white balance in-camera. That will have no effect on Pi but will make your pics look "not orange" when opened in most other packages.

I just downloaded IrfanView and a RAW plug in but it doesn't open my raw photos, it gives me an error message saying something about nedding some dll file. Before I go any further trying to figure out the problem can IrfanView load an entire folder and then I would be able to scroll through thumbnails?

I just ordered the CLS-CCD filter 2 nights ago and it hasn't got here yet but when it does I will set a custom WB for it. Right now I have a custom WB to compensate for the full spectrum modification so can you have 2 custom WB's or only 1?

Yes - IrfanView is very powerful - it will even show RAW files as Windows folder thumbnails, has a batch conversion (e.g. to tif, jpeg etc) facility etc etc - I have used it for many years.
When you point IrfanView at any folder it will let you scroll through all the viewable images (regardless of format) in that folder, loading each on onscreen and applying WB etc as it does so.

To install IrfanView for CR2 files you need to "install all plugins" from this page... IrfanView ALL plugins Free Download
this will download a single .exe which you run.

You can have 5 custom white balances stored in-camera at one time (may need to check this for your specific camera).

Do I run the exe file each time I use IrfanView or is that exe file for a setup to install all the plug ins to IrfanView?

It's a one-time install of the plugins. The start IrfanView and you should get no errors and you can open RAW files from your 550D.

I like this IrfanView. There is a lot more to it than I expected.

    Can it view .FIT files?

Sadly no... Very little can because it is so niche....

Well, IrfanView has the ability to operate FITS files via its FORMAT plugin (which loads via the Plugins Package that Phil led you to).

However, I don't know how well IrfanView (or any other App for that matter) handles ALL the "different flavors" of FITS data (NASA has some pesky ones, so does ESO).
While I don't normally deal in FITS, when I do I usually use ESO's FitsLiberator v3, or sometimes Fitswork v4.

Of curiosity, what do you have which outputs in FITS ?? (That doesn't also output in TIFF - a roughly equivalent format in Imaging terms...)
