People using modified DSLR's and Photoshop- What is the method you use to correct the color balance? Curves, levels or something else?

In the recommended settings in DSS it says something along the lines of if you're using a modified DSLR reset the white balance (especially Ha). Should that option be ignored and just use auto white balance?

You should ignore/turn off/disregard all WB settings in the camera and in DSS and use curves in PS to adjust the colour balance to your liking. make sure that DSS is setup to use RGB calibration (it's in settings somewhere).

Would using one of those filters on RAW photos that are then stacked in DSS, would the stack still be considered linear?
Yes, as long as you don't do any additional processing in DSS
And wold that stacked photo be considered "murky"?
I was merely trying to say that 'color' in astrophotography is a highly subjective thing, owing to the way human vision works and the way some software applications deal with it. There are no wrong or right answers, just more or less options depending on what your preferences are and what your software is capable of. Throw any narrowband data into the mix and all bets are off (as humans have no way to perceive most of it it in the first place).
And when am I supposed to do color correction in Star Tools? Do I turn off the track before color correction?
Perform color correction as one of the last steps before switching Tracking off. Have a look at the latest two tutorials if in doubt about your workflow. The reason why color correction in ST is performed as one of the last steps, is because color and luminance information is kept completely separate. The Tracking feature allows StarTools to selectively undo things that were done to the color data that may have been appropriate for the luminance information, but not for the color information. Additionally, because Tracking allows for total and utter separation of color and luminance processing, popular looks and methods of color rendition (which would typically take many operations) can be emulated at the click of a button from a drop down menu, along with some new more 'scientific' ways of color rendition (e.g. Color Constancy).
If you don't have one already you should do a tutorial video on how to process RAW data from a modified DSLR using Star Tools. I have data if you would like to use mine.
I'd love to have a look at your data and at the very least do a personalised tutorial. However, processing data from a modified DSLR should not really differ from processing data from an unmodified DSLR, except maybe some tweaks in the Color module based on personal preference.

I got my new computer yesterday so I've been busy transferring data and loading software but uploading a handful of RAW photos to my Dropbox shouldn't be a big deal for this machine like it would've been on my old one. As soon as I do I'll post a link for anyone or everyone. I did load the ST demo on the new machine and it operates way faster and I don't even have to resize the image.

Below is a link to a folder in my dropbox that has images of M31 shot in Hα and calibration frames. Folder includes lights, darks, flats and bias. It would be interesting to see other people stack and edit it to see what can be done with my data. But since it was shot with a full spectrum T4i there is a red cast present, I'm interested in hearing or seeing how you corrected the color and in which program.

irwjager - If you have some spare time, I'd like to see this data processed in Star Tools with a brief video.

I hope the link works. The total size of the folder is 1.99 GB, enjoy - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m3vbaxq25trb3oo/iY3OL9cVfo

I'm downloading the data now but just to be clear... this was shot on a full-spectrum DSLR through an Ha filter? - which filter was it?

I read all kinds of responses but it looks open ended. We all seem to dislike the overly red images of modified cameras. But what is the difference between "scaling down" and "losing red tones"? It just seems like you are reducing the red channel so to the eye you are losing data definitely even when you may be able to recover it technically. What I suspect you need is a color translation palette for a better color balance as one the initial processing stages. I don't trust that using a slider or a curve in Photoshop will do this.

irwjager, you seem to indicate that some tools let you use a palette in the initial stage, PI does but StarTools does not, did I understand that correctly? If not how can we change color while minimizing data loss in the perceived image?

The "information" is held in the luminance data. The chrominance adds the colour. The two can be changed independently. This is the entire basis of LRGB imaging and is why the RGB channels are often binned when using CCD cameras (they don't contribute to the detail which comes from the L).

Adjusting/balancing the chrominance levels in either the RGB or LAB colour spaces doesn't lose "information" if done properly.
