Default What happens when you don't match the target with the scope...

So last Sunday night I decided to image the North American Nebula - NGC7000 with my SCT. Equipment as follows:

    Canon 60da
    Celestron 1100hd with focal reducer
    CGEMDX mount
Guiding with PHD via SSAG on Celestron 80mm guidescope.

As you can see I got just part of the Nebula - not the best use of that evening but I did learn a lesson - be sure of the image size fits the focal length and scope design.

    NGC7000
    NGC7000 11 x 600 sec ISO800 with 4 darks, flats & bias, processed in ImagesPlus.

Comments and redicule is welcome - ok the redicule is not so welcome - but go ahead anyway.
    -Paul

One can always stitch images, more time and effort. I think a refractor may be in your future to have good widefield capabilities added to your collection. Nice round stars in that data!

Paul you can use the ocular plug-in in Stellarium (free-ware) to model scope and camera combinations and play around with framing on different objects. Saved me a bunch of time, and also let me play around to better understand what new equipment would do before I purchased it.

hah. I tried M31 with my 8"SCT and a f/6.3 focal reducer. I didn't spend all that much time imaging it after I saw how little of M31 fit in the FoV.

That is M32 to the right of M31, not M110!

Try using Ron Wodalski's CCDcalculator. It'll match the image scale of a DSO to your telescope and camera. I use it all the time before imaging since I do shorter-focal work, lets me know if a target is worth going after or not.

I spent 4 nights this past week fitting IC1805 - Heart Nebula - into my F/4 Newt: by means of a 3x2 panorama.

Then I repeated the same Imaging Session in one evening with my Nikkor 180ED F/2.8 Lens.

Still a great picture, I hope I can get anywhere near that clarity when I begin to attempt stacking.
Love the picture of M-31 too, simply awestruck when I see pictures like that!
