Default Need some advise on codec / compression etc with neximage 5/icap 5

Hi, new to the forum. Australian living in Denver, Colorado. Been an amateur astronomer all my life. Recently got myself a Celstron 8 SE and Neximage 5. Having mixed results.

I have attached a montage of Jupiter shots I took in November & December 2012. Where I live has lots of light pollution, and the seeing on these nights varied from quite poor with high thin "fog" like clouds to perfectly clear.

My settings were pretty much factory, except I fiddled with the gain/exposure/frames ps etc. I'm only just reading about the codecs and compressed vs uncompressed - but it doesn't really make much sense to me (compression does). Could someone tell me if my images are in the order of what to expect or should I be able to obtain much better images?

I like my scope, but find the tracking when taking photos is horrendous. The image will drift around, often settling in a corner with part of the planet out of field. My attempts at moving the scope usually result in worse drift or it being jerked completely out of view.

    Thanks!jupiter-montage.jpg

    Welcome to the forum!

I can't answer your question, but I know I would be happy if I could get those images.

Welcome to the forum. From what I have seen, those are pretty good Jupiter images.

On the tracking you may want to read through: 8SE (6SE) Primer for New Owners

I had some of the same issues you are complaining of when I first got my Nexstar 6se. I realized after reading the previous linked post that I wasn't paying enough attention to my alignment process. Additionally when you center say Jupiter for a video shoot you want to do your final movement in the same direction as your alignment (up and right). This keeps the backlash adjusted out and insures that the planet doesn't drift out of FOV.

Those are some quite nice shots of Jupiter. Oh and as a neighbor (I also live in Denver) greetings.

Hey thanks for the advise and the link. I've certainly read a lot on the tracking rate/backlash settings - to be honest, they don't make much sense. I'll try the "up and right" as you suggest. Thanks again...this cold is a bit of shock after such a mild winter so far!

Thanks for everyone's replies. I figured my Jupiter shots were below par for what is achievable. I've been doing a ton of reading on using registax, and found a few tricks that made quite a difference on really what aren't the best videos to begin with. I attach an example from 2 nights ago - this was a rushed job - but quite a bit of detail can be seen.
