Here is my take on which indices I need for Astrotortilla. Whether I'm right remains to be proven, as I'm still working on getting AT working on my system. However:

As Phil pointed out, the indices are constructed for certain ranges of field sizes. These sizes are listed in the readme file available at README in trunk/src/astrometry.

Here is an extract from that file:

Index Filename Range of skymark diameters File Size

    (arcminutes) (MB)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    index-210+.tar.bz2 -- 60 - 2000, 29mb
    index-209.tar.bz2 -- 42 - 60, 30mb
    index-208.tar.bz2 -- 30 - 42, 61mb
    index-207.tar.bz2 -- 22 - 30, 125mb
    index-206.tar.bz2 -- 16 - 22, 255mb
    index-205.tar.bz2 -- 11 - 16, 526mb
    index-204.tar.bz2 -- 8 - 11, 1,023mb
    index-203.tar.bz2 -- 5.6 - 8.0, 2,089mb
    index-202.tar.bz2 -- 4.0 - 5.6, 4,260mb
    index-201.tar.bz2 -- 2.8 - 4.0, 5,878mb
    index-200.tar.bz2 -- 2.0 - 2.8, 10,058mb
    --------------------------------------------------------------

So the question is, which range of skymark diameters is appropriate for my telescope/camera combination?

It was surprisingly difficult to find, but I found an old discussion thread from another astronomy forum that gave the following formula for calculating field of view at prime focus (I can't vouch for this, but it seems sound):

focal length x angular size (in radians) = size at image plane

Reorder this to calculate angular size

angular size (in radians) = size at image plane / focal length

The diagonal sensor size on my Canon T2i is 26.8 mm (22.3 mm X 14.9 mm). The focal length of my Orion reflector is 1000 mm.

The angular field of view in radians, therefore, is 26.8/1000 = 0.0268 radians (approximately).

Converting radians to degrees yields 1.54 degrees or approximately 92 arcminutes.

Based on this calculation, theoretically, the only astrometry index I should need for my setup is 210+, which is approxmately 29 mb. I don't know how sensitive the indices are, so I'll try 209 and 208 as well.

If you have a 1400 SCT F11 with a 3910 FL, your FOV would be approximately 23.5 arcminutes and you would need index 207, which is approximately 125 mb.

As I said, this hasn't been proven in practice.

I'll follow up after I've had a chance to try this out for real.

Hmm... That image I attached earlier only solves with index 5. That image was taken on a 550D at 500mm...

From speaking to other AT users on other forums, for a DSLR and a focal length of 500 then you need set 5, for focal lengths 500-1100 you need set 4.
Still not clear on the maths!

    Interesting Phil,
I guess that kicks my theory out the window. If the equation I posted was correct, and the indices are bracketed as stated, indices 210+ should have been satisfactory. I was trying to get AT working in simulator mode on my computer last night with no success. Maybe that's because the FOV of the indices I downloaded were too large. I'll try adding additional indices and see if it works. So far I haven't resolved even AT's sample images, so I don't even know what I'm expecting as an out put.

    Thanks for your empirical imput.

To be honest, Phil, I'm still trying to get AT and CYGWIN installed properly. When I was unable to get any resolution I decided to uninstall and reinstall everything hoping it would work better. I think I overlooked some things during the initial install. I read something on the AstronomyShed forum that CYGWIN needs certain permissions to work. Do you know anything about that?

I simply followed the AT install instructions to the letter.
Deleting the c:\cygwin folder gets rid of all traces of cygwin
I never have to do anything with permissions on my PC's as they only have one user defined and that user has admin privileges - saves a lot of hassle.

    Phil,
Read the instructions? Why would I do that?
Like you, I'm the only user and my own tech support and log in with admin privileges. I've never bothered with privileges, but thought there may be something required regarding virus protection, etc. I'm going to delete cygwin tonight and give it another go.

Installing CYGWIN is the hardest part because of the need to select an additional mirror site... that and unpacking the index files properly (fortunately I have WINRAR installed...)

If you don't read the install instructions and follow them precisely there's zero chance of AT working properly unfortunately :-) - this is one of the most painful installs I've done in several years.

This software REALLY needs a better install routine. I guess the problem is the reliance on the CYGWIN environment. It needs a native WIN64 platform IMO.

I use MSE and it just works (unlike all of the other AV packages out there, some of which are worse than the Malware they are supposedly protecting against - Kaspersky and Norton spring to mind).

Anyway - no, I have never issued CYGWIN with any permissions...

Keep me posted, I may be able to help!

    Phil,
Thought I posted this earlier, but it either got lost in the ether or I forgot to his post. I finally got AT to resolve your image of NGC2244, and of the sample image apod2 that is installed with CYGWIN. I have not, however, been able to get AT to resolve any of the images that I took this past summer, or any of the other sample images. Your image resolved with just index 205 installed. I added indices 204 through 208 to see if they would help, but it merely slowed resolution of your image. I let one image of the Andromeda galaxy that I took this summer run for well over an hour with no resolution. So, AT works, but doesn't work on everything. I'm guessing that the issue now is tweaks to AT and getting the quality and format of the input images correct.

My next step is to try to get AT to work live with images taken through my T2i using Nebulosity and see if AT will slew my scope to a target picked using Stellarium. I don't like trying to troubleshoot software in the cold and dark while clear sky is passing overhead, but I haven't found a way to test AT, Stellarium, StellariumScope, EqMod, and Nebulosity using simulation. Any suggestions on how to test how the parts work together without an actual telescope attached would be appreciated.

Looks like tonight will be clear for the first time in a week, so, if the weather prediction holds, I'll give it a go tonight and see what happens. I'll let you know how things go. Thanks for your help.
